The Wolfsgrube ("wolves' pit") near Wildenroth is a remainder from the end of the last ice age. At that time, large ice boulders broke off from the "vivid" glaciers covering southern Bavaria. These "dead" ice blocks were covered with rubble and till. When the ice finally melted in the subsequent warmer periods, pits with the typical steep slopes were left behind.
Dead ice pits are fairly common in the landscapes shaped and created by the glaciers; there are plenty of them in the east of Munich near river Inn and also there are two more pits not far from the Wolfsgrube at N48°05.233 / E011°11.175 near the village of Etterschlag. The Haspelmoor (a bog near N48°13.450 / E011°05.201, refer to geocache GCP8BN) has its origin in a dead ice pit, too. But it is special for the Wolfsgrube, that this pit is neither overgrown nor has been filled with water over the ages.
Former generations believed that the pit was used to trap wolves, thus it was named "wolves' pit". By the way, the Wolfsgrube is one of the "100 most beautiful geological sites" in Bavaria. More about these site can be found here.

ha trovato la geocache
Vom Cachen kam ich mit dem Radl aus Schondorf zurück und wollte unbedingt endlich diese Wolfsgrube "abhaken". Aber aus der Richtung Grafrath kann man die Wolfsgrube leider nur mit dem PKW 'im Vorbeifahren' erledigen. Auf dem Hinweg musste ich tausend Schleifen drehen und die Weiterfahrt richtung Schöngeising ging gleich gar nicht. Durch den ewigen Hinweg und viel zu viele Versuche, ein schönes Panoramafote mit meiner Mütze zu erhalten musste ich dann im dunkeln bei funzeligem Batterielicht durch den Wald auf unbekannten Wegen radeln. War aber sicherlich besser als bei Dunkelheit mitten auf der B471, schliesslich bin ich gesund und munter daheim angekommen.
Danke fürs Zeigen des Loches, es war mir ein schönes Abenteuer.
Auf dem Foto könnte man meinen, dass alles verwackelt ist, weil die Mütze und das Geländer so seltsam aussehen. Das schaut in Wirklichkeit aber auch so aus, deshalb waren wir ja da ... :-)

Mein Junior und ich haben im Umkreis von 5 Metern alles abgesucht und keine Dose gefunden.
Das Toteisloch ist wirklich interessant und ohne "opencaching.de" hätten wir wahrscheinlich
nie davon erfahren. :-)

Für den heutigen International Earthcache Day hatte ich mir den EC von den Kollegen als eigentliches Radtourenziel ausgesucht. Die Fahrt hat sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt, denn dieses Toteisloch ist besonders tief und gut zu erkennen. Kein Wunder, das es zu einem der schönsten Geotope gekürt wurde.
