This is a series of caches about the Aachen-Frankfurter-Heerstraße (AFH), the military road the German Emperors used in order to get to Aachen for their crowning ceremony. Hence the name "Krönungsstraße", which translates to "crowning road".

The Via Regia has been the most important road connecting Aachen and Frankfurt from the times of Charlemagne to the late 19th century. After being elected in Frankfurt they travelled to Aachen for their crowning ceremony.Moreover, the road was used for trading or troop movements. From Düren to Sinzig it roughly follows today's motorway 61. This section is special, as it has the steepest inclines of the entire road. The impact on the landscape is visible up to date, although many sections have vanished due to land cosolidation. But on satellite photos the course is well visible.

General information:

With this series I will only cover the AFH in the region of Grafschaft, there are a number of information posts throughout the marked hiking trail. Additional information can be found on the internet, on the information posts and at local clubs devoted to regional traditions. The hinking trail has been marked by the "Eifelverein".Every cache station is designed as a short multi-stage cache with trails under 5 km. Of cource, you can hike the whole trail at once (about 11 km, one-way!); then, it might be best to start in Eckendorf, because the station fit together best. Please follow the hinking sign "AFH" (black font on white square).The trail follows dirt roads, so hiking or (mountain-)biking is no problem, nevertheless, strollers or wheelchairs may not do the whole route. Cars or motorcycles are not allowed. After a raining peroid the road might be very muddy.

MULTI STAGE (5 km, on track: 1.5 km)

Parking is possible at PPRM01, you'll get to WPRM01 via RPRM01, then go parallel to the old railroad embankment.

This station mainly covers the steepest incline of the whole road. The information sign is located directly at the old embankment; going eastwards, the AFH is visible as a shallow depression a few metres off to the right. Coming to the decline, the AFH goes slightly to the south, you have great view of the road there. Here, the seep decline continues until the road reaches the brook. Coming from the other direction, the steep hill could only be overcome using additional draft.

At WPRM01 please find the following information:

Down to the left are three heights given. Take each digit sum. The one of the lowest is A, the one of the highest is C and the digit sum of the one in the middle is B. Add all three heights to get DEF.

The Final is located at:

Don't forget to note the Bonus number!

Head back to the parking area via RPRM02, RPRM03 and RPRM01. If you want to continue go right at RPRM02 and follow the street for several hundred metres, until you find the next information sign to your left.

Für die 4-5 Logs (davon einige OC und GC), die in den drei Jahren hier kamen, ist die Pflege und Aktualisierung von parallelen Listings zu aufwändig. Der Cache ist noch vor Ort und kann über GC geloggt werden.

Nachdem ich heute aus der Serie bereits den Cache Hochkreuz gefunden hatte, bin ich beschwingt weiter zum Bahndamm der Strategischen Bahn marschiert. Ich habe dort in aller Ruhe die Aufgaben gelöst und den Final berechnet. Zum Final musste ich allerdings dann doch noch einige hundert Meter gehen. Ich habe ihn dann nach kurzer Suche - in einer absolut muggelfreien Zeit - um 11:00 Uhr gefunden. Zurück zum Parkplatz in Leimersdorf war es dann noch ein schöner Spaziergang in der frischen Luft.

Heute ist wieder Mittwoch und nach Beendinung der Sommerferien per se ein Cachevormittag, auch wenn unser Zeitfenster i-Dötzchen induziert in den nächsten Jahren wider kleiner ausfallen wird...
So haben wir uns für heute auch nur genau diesen Via Regia-Cache ausgesucht.
Froh gemut ging's los, so dass wir gar nicht merkten, 5km marschiert zu sein.
Die Runde war ausgesprochen tierrisch, so wurden wir von einem Bullen verfolgt (der aber gar nicht mitgekriegt hatte, dass sein Elekrozaun a) nicht geladen und b) an einer Stelle komplett darnieder lag), aber unser Cerberus Finja konnte ihn in die Flucht schlagen, sahen einen Fuchs und ein Reh. Auch erfreuten wir uns an einem kitschig schönen Sonnenblumenfeld (kann mal jemand die Hochspannungsleitungen für's Foto rausreißen) und an Erdbeeren (schon vom Bauern gepflückt und als Mangelware eingestuft, aber einwandfrei und super lecker).
Und wir haben sogar die Bonuszahl notiert (auch wenn wir dafür wieder ein kurzes Stück zurück mussten[:P]).
