[EN] The “Wuppertaler Schwebebahn” (Suspension railway
of Wuppertal) is one of the TOP 100 landmarks in Germany. Floating
through Wuppertal – at a height of between 8 and 12 metres, and for a
length of 13.3 km. The city's landmark has been fully renovated between
1992 and 2014 in preparation for the next hundred years.
The monorail was invented by Cologne engineer Eugen Langen. Work started
in 1898 and two years later the German emperor, Wilhelm II, inspected
this miracle of technology. It was opened on March 1st, 1901.
Today, after almost 120 years, the Wuppertal suspension railway is one
of the world's safest and most comfortable means of transport. It
conveys almost 20 million passengers each year. Some are on their way to
work, school and shopping, while others simply want to enjoy the unique
experience offered by
the monorail for a sightseeing ride.
