Dresden - Waterscreen

Before having the "Dresdner Postplatz" restructured in August 2006 there was set a competition to to design the space nearby the theatre (Dresden Schauspielhaus) using the element water. In November 2006 a jury decided for the draft "Waterscreen" by Rainer Splitt from Berlin (year of birth = 196A).

"Waterscreeen" is a sculpture made of water which shows the interweavement of spaces, their entrances and contours. Referring to an real curtain used on stages Waterscreen represents a curtain made of water. The water is moved by 153 injectors sprinkling the water both vertically and horizontally within a thick frame in dark red which has the size of 4x12 metres. An electronic control imitates different curtain opening and closing moves.

Since the final installation in October 2007 the water curtain had to be shut down and restarted several times due to different technical problems. In the meantime the water curtain is running fine though some minor changes still have to be done.

The water curtain can be seen in full action daily between 10a.m. and 9:45 p.m., always at clock hour and at half hour, running for 15minutes. In daylight it has a beautiful colour made by the sun, in the dark is is illuminated artificially.
