Description    Deutsch  ·  English

For geologists and rock researchers Aachen is not an uninteresting place.
Especially the Kaiserplatz, the deepest point of the city, is a rewarding school example.
Even the rock on which Aachen's second oldest church of St. Adalbert was built, shows various rock formations and interesting relics of antiquity to experts.
The rock is a 7meters high Devonian slate rock, which is in Aachen also known as Adalbertfelsen.

The Adalbertfelsen is a part of the Rhenish Slate Mountain.
The Rhenish Slate Mountain is a western part of the German low mountain country which consists of a left rhenisch part with Ardennes, Eifel, Hohes Venn and Hunsrück) and a right rhenish part with Bergisches Land, Sauerland, Siegerland, Westerwald and Taunus.
The average height of the plateau is 550m.

The Devon (era) is in the geological era the fourth period of the Palaeozoic before 405 to 355 million years ago. It is called after the county of Devonshire in England, where Devonian sediments after 1830 were examined. The Devonian lasts from the end of the Silurian Period to the beginning of the Carboniferous Period.

To log the earth cache, please make a photo of you and/or your GPS in front of the rocks and answer the following question. You need a measuring tape.

1.When was the "Adalbertfelsen" expelled as natural monument by the city of Aachen, for its rarity and uniqueness, as well as earth science and geological reasons?
(Warning: The answer is only available on the Internet, not locally)

2. The “Kaiserplatz” at the foot of the Adalbertfelsen is with 158 meters above sea level, the deepest point of the city of Aachen.
Compare it with the altitude on your GPS and mention the deviation in your Log.

3. The “Adalbertfelsen” is 700cm high, but how many centimeters long?
Measure up the length of the visible rocks.

4. How many steps (white lines) are there up to the Adalbertstift?

5. Some steps (white lines) to the “Adalbertstift” have direct contact with the rocks.
How many are there?

6. Above, in the parking lot under and beside the cross you can find further breakdowns of the rock. A “Kalksteinbank” here rises to the surface, but unfortunately a few centimeters above the ground it is torn down and tarred with asphalt to make room for one car. What kind of geometric figure can you see on the ground?

7. In the crevices of theAdalbertfelsen grow some plants. What kind of tree is this?

8. In the immediate vicinity of the Adalbertfelsen on the same level is another visible rock. How many meters away is the rock from the Adalbertfelsen?

The answers to the questions and the results of your measurements please send via "Send Message" function to my user account. Then you get the release to log. Thank you.
Please add the photo within three weeks in your log, otherwise, your log will be deleted without comment.A valid log must meet all conditions!

Have fun!
Greetings Piefendeckel
