Ice holes of Appiano / Eislöcher von Eppan

The Ice holes of Appiano are local cold air areas and all year covered round with ice. Because the temperature decisively deviates from in general in the region to usual ones.This rare biotope offers, here 500 m of sea level, an unusual living space for more than 500 botanical species,otherwise there is only in the high alpine. The area is stamped by porphyry rubble masses, decomposition products above precipitously climbing up mountain (Mendel). The physical phenomenon: In the upper openings of the quartz porphyry warm air streams in summer,cools down in the rocks (cooled from the winter), sinks down and streams out in the lower openings of the rock again as a cold air. The air has a temperature between 0 - 7 degrees in the lower area.

You can reaches the Earthcache at approx. 30 minutes about a signposted footpath, firm footwear is recommended.

To log this Earthcache please take a picture of yourself with GPS oppositely of the sign of information ,

and answer four questions:

1. On what physical principle based the phenomenon ?

2. What's the hight of the "Lake Coldair" ?

3. On how many posts is the sign of information fastened ?

4. How is the name of the plant in the right upper corner (sign of information)?

Die Eislöcher bei Eppan sind lokale Kaltluftgebiete und ganzjährig mit Eis bedeckt.  Da die Temperatur entscheidend von den allgemein in der Region üblichen abweicht, bietet dieses seltene Biotop, hier auf 500 m Meereshöhe,einen ungewöhnlichen Lebensraum für über 500 Pflanzenarten, die es sonst nur im Hochgebirge gibt.Das Gebiet ist geprägt durch Porphyrschuttmassen, Verwitterungsprodukte des oberhalb steil aufsteigenden Berges (Mendel). Das Naturphänomen: An den oberen Öffnungen des Quarzporphyr strömt im Sommer warme Luft ein, kühlt an dem vom Winter ausgekühlten Fels ab, sinkt hinuter und strömt an den unteren Öffnungen des Gesteins wieder als kalte Luft aus. Die Luft hat im unteren Bereich eine Temperatur zwischen 0 - 7 Grad.

Den Earthcache kann man in ca. 30 Minuten über beschilderte Wanderwege erreichen, festes Schuhwerk wird empfohlen.

4. Wie lautet der Name der Pflanze in der rechten oberen Ecke (Infotafel) ?
