Descrizione    Deutsch  ·  English (Inglese)

The Amalienhöhe Mine (also known as Dr. Geier Mine – whose construction started in 1885) is situated above Waldalgesheim at the periphery of the Hunsrück in immediate nearness of Bingen/Rhine. The former manganese and dolomite mine is unique among the industrial monuments in Germany due to its neo-baroque architecture.

During the period of operation, the minerals calcite, dolomite, epsomite, limonite, pyrolusite, rhodochrosite and romechite were found in the mined ores. The iron manganese ores of the Dr. Geier Mine near Bingen/Rhine are part of the manganese decomposition deposits. They are connected to medium devonic dolomites of an isoclinal basin, which are overlaid by marine sands resulting from the Oligocene. Sites of formation are dolines of the dolomite karst. The forming of dolines depends on spreading zones of massive dolomites as well as on zones of strong tectonic stress, in which they have developed through compound corrosion. Their fillings consist up to 50% of ore-free tertiary fine sands and clays. From the mineralogical point of view the character of the founding site is determined by its color intensive rhodochrosites, which are considered to be among the best in Germany. Further details may be taken from the Atlas of Minerals.

The ore was partly sold to smelteries and partly to the ceramic industry as colored ore. The mining of the decomposition deposit was started in the mining field Concordia near Stromberg. The exact time is not known.
First indications date back to the year 1628.
The mine is mentioned in a report of a French mining engineer named Calmelet, who had to do a revision job on the ironworks of the departments ‘Rhine et Moselle et Mont Tonnerre’ (Rhein-Mosel-Donnersberg) in 1808/09.

Having arrived at the coordinates, you will find an info panel. Here are some questions to answer. Please send your answers to GC2D4GZ@drhh.de for
permit to log.

1. What was created by the mining industry "without backfill"?

2. What was formed by the remains still visible today?

3. From which year originates the earliest written document about the
    mining operation?

4. How many tons of ore and dolomite were totally mined?

I would appreciate a photo of the winding tower.
