Description    Deutsch  ·  English

The final cache was located at the coordinates N 50°4A.BCD' E 08°4E.FGH'
As the cachebox has been stolen, the (new) stash moved 390 m / 300° from the original position!

To obtain the digits A up to H, you need to go to three auxiliary stages and answer a couple of questions there.

The coordinates of the auxiliary stages (in no special order) are:
N 50°47.212' E 08°47.840'
N 50°47.187' E 08°47.655'

N 50°46.777' E 08°48.525'

Which of the questions listed below corresponds to which auxiliary stage, will become evident right at the spot.

Questions

Here you will find yourself close to a refuge (hut). Search for a place for having a rest within a radius of 40 meters around the refuge. There you will find a sign.
Of how many words does the text on the sign consist of? Let zy denote this number.
Determine the row of the text on the sign with the smallest number of words. How many words occur in this line? Let x denote this number.
Determine the row of the text on the sign with the largest number of words. How many words occur in this line? Let w denote this number divided by 2.

Here you find two low boulders.
How large is the distance between them? (The tolerance for the accuracy of the measurement is assumed to be 10 cm.) Let vu0 cm denote the distance in demand.

Here you will come across a stone with hollows the shape of which looks like a bowl.
Fill the "bowl" which is indicated on the photograph with the liquid you brought with you.
Suppose you use a spoon with a volumetric capacity of 25 ml for scooping and for pouring the liquid into the bowl.
How many spoonsful (the spoon has to be filled completely each time) can you pour into the bowl without creating an overflow? Let this number be ts.

Calculation of the digits required for obtaining the coordinates of the final cache
A = y
B = s-2
C = v+1
D = w
E = z

F = t
G = u
H = x

Trading rules:
You are kindly asked to bring only trading items that are made out of natural materials.
Plastic is feasible only as packaging material!
Please refrain from TNLN logs. Keep in mind that TBs are not regarded as regular trading items.

Prerequisites for the cache hunt

You will need devices for measuring distances and for measuring the volumetric capacity of the "bowl" mentioned above.

We wish you a successful cache hunt!

Found 30 April 2007 Quästor found the geocache

I had put this cache on my to-do list already back in October when it had turned up. Today I finally got the chance to go for this cache I was so eager to do during the last weeks.

The weather was very fine, sunny and not windy at all. The temperature was, however, below zero which caused the volume measuring task to become more involved . Suprisingly, I obtained the correct result for ts and even more surprisingly, the volume I obtained differed only by a small amount from the volume Alice had obtained when she had hidden the cache. Although I am a rather clumsy person, I liked this measuring task very much. My only concern was that I needed too much time as Alice, who was so kind to come with me, is not as cold-resistant as I am. In order to arrive at the final result, I needed many intermediate steps (I will not write more here to avoid giving away spoilers about the approach I used).

The volume measuring task is the most creative task I have so far encountered at an intermediate stage of a multi-cache in the forest. Moreover, the stone with the many bowls is worth a visit on its own. Without caching I would never have got the chance to visit such a nice place.

The next task waiting for me was measuring the distance between the two boulders. I was not exactly sure whether I should measure the distance on the floor (which was not that easy) or at the height where the distance is minimized. Fortunately, the final result for uv turned out to be the same.

The final task was to count the words on the sign. Being a mathematician, I do not like to count large amounts. So I decided to count the number of words in each line separately and then add the obtained numbers over all lines.

Calculating and assembling the coordinates of the old hiding place was no problem as the calculcations are designed in a "mathematician-friendly" way . I first visited the old hiding place which indeed is very nice, but it was very difficult for me to get there and to get back to the path. I needed some help and advice from Alice who was so kind to accompany me. She did not help me as the caching was regarded, but was so kind to borrow me some equipment I needed for the various measurement tasks. The terrain around the old hiding place is not at all Cezanne-friendly - I would not have been able to trade something at this place. I was extremely glad once I had again both legs in a more comfortable position and there was no danger to slip downwards .... I really will never learn how to use my hiking boots in a way which would allow me to reach at least places almost everyone else can access easily even when wearing sneakers.

Finding the cache box and accessing the new hiding place was very easy. The GPS reception was good today and the coordinates are quite exact. The area around the hiding place is very cacher-friendly in my opinion. There exist only a limited number of potential hiding places that have to be looked at and the terrain is easy. For someone coming from a country with many mountains, deep valleys, gorges and similar "obstacles" for cache hunters a target area like the one where this cache is hidden is like a piece of cake.

Thanks Alice for one of the nicest caches I have done so far . I will never forget this cache. It was great fun to solve the tasks and it was a very pleasant walk in a very nice area I have never been before although this is not my first visit to Marburg, one of my favourite cities in the world.

Probably, the terrain rating should be at least 2* (here I am taking into account that it is not necessary to visit the old hiding place). I'd also suggest to increase the difficulty rating to 3* as it is a multi-cache which requires quite some preparation.

Found 28 December 2003 murmeltier found the geocache

Found by Murmeltier
