Description
Kouloukonas mountain is built mainly from rocks of the “Plattenkalk” group. The peculiarities of this section are based on the fact that these rocks now appear in an upside down position, with the younger rocks being covered by the older ones (fodele and sisses formation 250 Mio. – 280 Mio. years). You can that as a intense folding.
One of the characteristic rocks of Talea Ori Mountains is stromatolithic dolomite (marble). As a result of the rotation (inversion) that they underwent these rocks are today found below the marbles of Sisses and above the thickbedded white marbles. Their age is Upper Triassic. The impressiv brown-red strings are as a result of iron deposits. The rocks are patterned by the action of marine organisms. The stromatolites that live in anoxic environments (without oxygen). These organisms absorb dissolved iron and release oxygen and are amongst the oldest organisms to first emerge three billion years ago.

Heute haben wir Rethymno besucht und auf dem Rückweg zum Hotel haben wir gehalten um uns diese Stelle näher angesehen und viel interessantes entdeckt und erfahren.

Geloggt auf GC: Tftec. We passed by this place many times, just one stop 5 years ago for a nearby mystery. Today we stopped again to figure out the answers of this earthcache. It wasn't too hard, so thx Bex&Moe for leading us here again.
