Silk Worm Cultivator (Sericulture)
Nearly in every village in Datça silkworm rearing was famous. Once tourism in Datça picked up in the 1980s, sericulture was rapidly forgotten. This craft has been come into prominence thanks to volunteers’ efforts. A sweet haste sets in to Datça in every Spring. The silkworms start to feed in April, and in May, they start weaving cocoons. In early June, the silk is turned into skeins via a process called “gelep,” carried out with collective labor.
