Cava è famosa in Italia per i suoi lunghi portici su cui si affacciano attività commerciali. Questi sono il risultato dell’evoluzione dell’impianto urbano più antico del centro città, nato in epoca medievale principalmente come borgo commerciale. Sul corso, in particolare in questo punto specifico dei portici, si può osservare l’evoluzione dell’abitato e del centro di commercio cavese dai suoi primi esemplari – la bottega porticata con annessa abitazione al piano superiore – di origine germanica e già attestati in epoca medievale, a quelli via via successivi, sviluppatisi nel corso dell’età moderna. La casa/negozio è stata inizialmente ampliata in larghezza a comprendere due arcate porticate e poi in altezza con l’aggiunta di un ulteriore piano superiore. A queste strutture furono poi affiancati veri e propri palazzi signorili a più piani, con corte centrale e ampi giardini posteriori.
