About the location

When you reach Kuševica, one of the highest peaks on the island of Krk, medieval history is probably the last thing you expect to find. Much of the summit is occupied by telecommunications equipment, service buildings and fenced-off technical facilities.

Hidden among them, however, lies a small but remarkable cultural monument: the ruins of the Romanesque Church of St. George (Sv. Juraj).

The church was founded in 1230 by the nobleman Juraj Pariježić from the nearby village of Kras. After the death of his last descendant, it became property of the Parish of Dobrinj. As the church received little maintenance over the centuries, it gradually fell into ruin and was already described as such in the late 16th century. Nevertheless, the Brotherhood of St. George continued to gather here for some time.

The site's greatest historical significance lies not in the ruins themselves, but in the church's foundation charter. Dating from 1230, it is one of the oldest surviving documents written in the ancient Croatian Glagolitic script, making it an important milestone in Croatian cultural history.

Even today, locals often refer to Kuševica simply as Sv. Juraj (St. George) – a reminder that the church once gave its name to the mountain.
