Шивачът ушива дрехи като панталони, поли, ризи, блузи и др. съобразно желанията на клиентите. Една от основните дейности е също така възстановяването на скъсани дрехи, както и поправката им по размер на клиента. Като допълнение в по-ранни времена към ушиването на чанти и дрехи, шивачът е произвеждал и военни дрехи. В наши дни, шивачът е отстъпил мястото си на модните дизайнери.
