Red-haired Zora

The novel for teenagers “Red Zora and her gang” was written by Kurt Kläber under the pseudonym Kurt Held after staying in Senj on the eve of World War Two, and published for the first time in 1941. A 13-episode TV series of the same name was shot in Senj in 1978 as a German-Swiss-Yugoslavian co-production.The plot takes place in Senj in the 1930s, and Kurt Held based his story on real people and events. 14-year-old Zora is the leader of a gang of orphans who call themselves the uskoks and hide in the Nehaj Fortress above the town of Senj. Apart from professional actors, many amateurs from Senj also participated in the series, such as two boys from Zora’s gang – Branko and Nikola, and many other extras whom you can still encounter while walking the streets of Senj…Let’s discover the town of the Red Zora!

A) Zora's gang played the prank with the spoiled fish here.

C) This is where Zora and her gang hid from the police. The parade celebrating the abundant fish catch also took place here.

D) This is where Zora's gang got into a fight with the high school students of Senj. (Unfortunately, this square is currently being renovated.)

H) In the series, this is where Zora's gang defended their friend Stjepan, who was being attacked by a group of high school students.

K) The poor boy Branko was thrown into prison for allegedly stealing a fish, and Zora helped him escape through a window. He was then accepted into the gang.

R) This is where the sad scene took place in which Branko learned of his mother's death.

S) This is where the market was located, where poor Branko was wrongly accused of stealing a fish and was subsequently thrown into prison.

T) At that time, the Pletnić Inn and the Čurčin Bakery were located here. The baker took pity on the children and gave the gang his dry bread every morning so they wouldn't go hungry.

W) The scene in which Branko swims with his first love, Zlata, was filmed here.

Z) The steps and terrace were the setting for numerous scenes. Here, for example, Branko asked the musicians if they knew his father because he wanted to avoid being sent to live with his grandmother.
