Description
This cache leads you to the ruins of the ancient Phoenician city
of Solus (Solunto), situated on Monte Catalfano above the
fisher-village Porticello. The city was built in the 7th century
B.C. as an outpost of Palermo against the Greek expansion.
Dyonisios I. destroyed the city in 397 B.C., afterwards Timoleon
built around 350 B.C. a new tessellate greek-style city on the
mountain. In the second century B.C. the place was abandoned. The
remains of a theatre, the large main street, a bouleuterion, many
houses (some with mosaics on the floor) and small Phoenician
sanctuarys are excavated and visible. Opening hours of the Parco
Archeologico: Monday-Saturday 9.00-18.00, Sunday 9.00-14.00.
The container is hidden outside the archaeological area and it is
not necessary to pay for the entrance to reach the cache, but to
get up the hill you are dependent to the opening hours.
I suggest a visit of the small exhibition and the ruins above. The
view to Capo Zafferano is spectacular!
Tyrant81 helps with cache maintenance, thank you!
Enjoy the discovering of Solus,
Trollmond
