Forum in Fulfinum – Vergessene Stadt am Meer

Location
A hidden gem not only for archaeology enthusiasts lies on the outskirts of Omišalj: the Forum of Fulfinum. These are the remains of a Roman settlement founded around 50 AD under the reign of Emperor Claudius, specifically as a retirement town for veterans. The city was carefully planned and featured all the typical elements of Roman urbanism: a forum as the hub of public life, baths, a sanctuary, houses, and a street grid.

The forum itself was the social, economic, and political heart of the city. Excavations revealed impressive finds, including mosaics, an ivory comb, inscriptions, pottery shards, and numerous building remains. Especially noteworthy is the early Christian basilica nearby—one of the largest built in Croatia, dating from the 5th century. Later, it was converted into a monastery, and the site became known as “Mirine.”

Today, the partially restored ruins stand as a quiet yet powerful testament to Roman presence and early Christian communities on the Adriatic. The excavation site is not heavily touristed, giving it a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Informational panels and markers provide further insight. If the nearby oil tanks and port don't bother you, you can relax on the grass or stone slabs—or even take a dip in the sea.
