🧭 About the location

If you’ve already explored Rijeka’s highlights—from the Žabica bus station and the Adria Palace to the churches of Gospa Lurdska, Assumption of Mary, and St. Vitus (the Cathedral); the market halls; the Austro-Hungarian–era theater; the wartime tunnels; and the old opera house (now a “lost place”)—and perhaps even checked out the Maritime Museum or strolled along the Molo Longo, you’ll almost inevitably find yourself at the Korzo. Rijeka’s premier promenade is lined with shops, cafés, fountains, hidden courtyards, and a vibrant local atmosphere, especially after sunset.

Looking for a lesser‑known but fascinating sight? Pause at the leaning City Tower (Gradski toranj)—home to the world’s oldest analog-digital clock! Then wander through the enchanting Trg Koblerov, pass through the historic Stara vrata (Old City Gate), and you’ll soon stand before one of the city’s most important archaeological treasures: the remains of a Roman bath complex.

These remains were rediscovered in 2008 during renovations. They belong to the ancient city of Tarsatica, dating from the Roman imperial era. The baths were built in two stages:
– A smaller initial complex in the 1st century AD.
– A major expansion in the 3rd century, featuring ten rooms including heated bathing rooms (caldarium, tepidarium), a frigidarium with a cold-water pool, and a hypocaust system under the floor—ideal for both bathing and political gatherings. 😉

Wonder what it looked like back then? Just take a peek through the fixed viewing telescope and travel back in time.

Interestingly, these baths have stood in the heart of the city center since antiquity. One caveat for archaeology enthusiasts: while the site was fully excavated and documented, much of it—including early Christian mosaics—was re-buried after the study. Whether the archaeological zone will remain open to the public or be built over in the future is still uncertain.

🧩 About the Cache

At the edge of the excavation site, you’ll find an information board. The first word of the heading is your log password.

Also take a photo of yourself—or an object you brought—with a feature of the site that you especially like. Alternatively, a photo of the view through the telescope works perfectly.

Have fun exploring! 😊
