About the Location

In Povile – as well as in the neighboring village of Klenovica – Tunere were once a familiar sight along the coast. These tall wooden observation platforms were built near the shore and used by local fishermen to spot schools of tuna as they approached through the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic.

More than just a practical tool, the Tunere symbolized the deep connection between coastal communities and the sea, especially their reliance on tuna fishing, which shaped life in the region for centuries.
Even today, the sea remains central to life in Povile: many locals are still involved in fishing, run family-owned restaurants rooted in seafood traditions, or work in tourism – a sector that simply wouldn’t exist here without the sea.

In the summer of 2023, several new oversized Tunere were built, along with an informational sign – funded by a mid five-figure sum from the EU. This installation brings a centuries-old fishing tradition back into view and reestablishes it as a cultural landmark in the landscape.
They've also become a popular photo spot – especially at sunrise and sunset, as a flyer puts it in stylish travel lingo.

About the Cache

While you relax at the beach and gaze out to sea, take a moment to ponder this:
Why do tuna have to keep moving even when they sleep – and what biological and physical principles are behind it?

Answer the question in your own words in your log.
Also, add a photo of yourself (or any item you brought along) next to one of the tuna observation towers.

Have fun discovering, learning – and maybe even finding your new favorite spot on the Adriatic! :)
