Perched about 100 metres above the harbour on the eastern coast of Cres lies the picturesque village of Beli, one of the island's oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Narrow stone alleys, stairways, two churches, an old cemetery and terraced gardens where locals still grow olives, figs, grapes and vegetables give the village its unique charm.
For centuries, the inhabitants made their living mainly from agriculture, sheep farming and fishing. Today, tourism has become the village's most important source of income. With only around 45 permanent residents, many locals rent out holiday apartments or work in tourism-related businesses.
The hidden pebble beach below the village, lined with traditional stone boathouses, has gradually evolved from a quiet bathing spot into a small tourist centre with a beach bar, sunbed rental, a zipline and an improved access road.
Like many places, Beli illustrates both the benefits and challenges of tourism. It provides jobs and helps keep the village alive, but it also changes the character of the area and puts additional pressure on its fragile natural environment. The nearby cliffs are home to one of the last breeding colonies of griffon vultures in the Adriatic. A visitor centre introduces guests to these impressive birds and the ongoing conservation work.
Take your time to explore the village, enjoy its breathtaking views and historic atmosphere—and help preserve this special place by treating nature and wildlife with respect.
At the edge of the parking area you'll find a fire hydrant. A four-digit number is engraved near its bottom. This number is the log password.
Please also attach a photo of yourself or an item you brought with you together with something you particularly enjoyed in Beli.
Have fun! 🙂
