Die Vierpasskirche von Krk

About the location

Hidden in the northwestern part of Krk Island stands one of Croatia's most unusual medieval churches: St. Chrysogonus (Sv. Krševan).

Built in the 11th century, it is one of only two surviving Croatian churches with a quatrefoil (four-lobed) ground plan. From the outside, its simple rectangular façade gives little hint of its remarkable shape. Walk around the church and you'll discover its three semicircular apses with distinctive cross-shaped windows — a rare example of early Croatian Romanesque architecture.

The church is dedicated to Saint Chrysogonus, a Christian martyr from Aquileia. According to tradition, Emperor Diocletian — whose famous palace still dominates the old town of Split — offered him wealth and a prestigious position if he renounced his Christian faith. Chrysogonus refused and was executed for his beliefs. Today he is the patron saint of Zadar, which governed Krk for a period and is believed to have commissioned this church.

The site has been inhabited for a very long time. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains dating back to the 3rd century AD, and traces of the former settlement can still be seen around the church.

Several hiking parking areas are available nearby, ranging from just a short walk to longer scenic routes. One of Krk's most beautiful turquoise bays is also only a short detour away (see waypoints).
