![]() If you are visiting the small town of Marnheim nowadays, you'll notice the three arches of a former viaduct - a relict of the industrial revolution, memorial of the war and conspicuous landmark of Marnheim. (N 49° 38.270 E 008° 02.820) |
Theodor Fontane: The Bridge on the Tay "When shall we three meet again?" "By the bridge, at seven, down the lane." "By the middle pier." "I put out the flame." "I too." "I come from the northern sphere." "And I from the south." "From the sea I come here." "A merry dance it will be, ho! ho! And down to the bottom the bridge must go." "And the train that passes at seven through To cross the bridge?" "Hey, that goes too." "Goes too." "On sand, on sand, Rests all that is built by human hand." [...] (Translation: Helen Kurz Roberts) |
Once a large railway bridge of which there are only a few parts preserved spanned the Pfrimm valley near Marnheim. The viaduct that connected Marnheim to Alzey and Mainz used to be a lattice bridge with abutments made from sandstone. It was built between 1872 and 1874 and blasted away by German troops in March 1945 to stop the French army from advancing to the North. | ![]() Source: Heimatverein Marnheim |
The cache consists of 3 stages and the final.
Please try not to attract attention while searching and hide everything exactly in the way you have found it. (If this is impossible, please contact me asap.)
Caution! The railway below the remnants of the bridge is officially closed, but from the middle of April to the end of October on Sundays and some holidays there are special chartered trains of the so-called "Zellertal-Bahn" running. They drive very slow in this sector, but you should be very attentive near the rails and watch children very closely.

did not find the geoacache
