A walk on the abandoned railway

Description:

With this walk, you will have the opportunity to walk a short stretch of tracks that were part of the Urbino-Fabriano line. At this point, the railway crosses a ditch through a beautiful arched bridge, then crosses the hill through a tunnel. From here you can admire the landscape that travellers could observe from the windows of their wagons while they were going or coming back from Urbino.

History:

This stretch of railway is part of the Urbino-Fabriano line. According to the initial plans, this infrastructure should have been part of a much more extensive link called the Subappennina Railway which was never built.

The first section was opened on 28 April 1895 between Fabriano and Pergola, while Urbino was reached three years later, on 20 September 1898.

In 1944, the section suffered heavy damage by the retreating Germans, including the route beyond Urbino, which has not yet been completed. At the end of the conflict, only the section between Pergola and Fabriano was reactivated, on May 20, 1947, while the remaining sections were abandoned, except the short section between Fermignano and Urbino. This last one was reopened on February 2, 1956, to directly connect Urbino to Fano using the Fano-Urbino railway, instead, the Fermignano-Pergola trunk was not reactivated, thus depriving the railway of continuity.

The service was suspended on 31 January 1987 with the closure of the Fano-Urbino section.
