Ebeltoft 🍏

This pretty coastal town is sheltered on the inner side of the peninsula (Djursland) on Ebeltoft Vig, an inlet of the Kattegat, and belongs to the municipality of Syddjurs. Ebeltoft boasts of being the only port on the Baltic coast of Jutland with a westward view. It is believed that an apple tree on a hill was the focal point of the town's founding. (In Old Danish, Ebeltoft means "the fenced land of apples," and the apple was central to Viking religion.)

Since 2004, numerous apple orchards have been established in various locations in Ebeltoft. The goal of the orchards is to highlight Danish apples and, at the same time, to present Æbeltoft as an apple town. Currently, around 350 apple trees are planted in the orchards. The orchards not only adorn Ebeltoft but also delight many citizens who want to try a Danish apple. Picking and tasting the apples is free. The following varieties are available: Ingrid Marie, Elstar, Coxorange, Rød Aroma, Ahrista, Discovery, Skovfoged, Rubinola, Filippa, Kronprinz Frederiks Tafelapfel, Karen Blixen, and, last but not least, the Ebeltoft apple. The Ebeltoft apple is a variety over 100 years old, registered by Farver A.G. Pedersen, Farvergården, Ebeltoft. Among other things, the apple has a long ripening period and can therefore be stored until February and March.

Tips / Sights:

Ebeltoft has many winding streets with bumpy cobblestones and crooked half-timbered houses whose facades are covered in magnificent hollyhocks. The buildings are said to date back to the 14th century. The small town seems to have stepped straight out of the Middle Ages. (According to an old tradition, night watchmen have been walking through the streets singing their watch songs since 1950.)

Ebeltoft boasts two superlatives: the smallest and the largest.

The smallest town hall in the world, "Det Gamle Rådhus". 

And in the museum harbor lies the historic frigate Jylland, the longest preserved ship of its kind. It is 102 meters long from bow to stern, carries 44 cannons, and has a mast height of 57 meters.

In addition to centuries-old historical monuments, Ebeltoft has a special museum called GLAS. The Glass Museum at the harbor displays international exhibits as well as the numerous works of Ebeltoft glass artists. Glassblowing is a special feature of the city, which is why it is also called the "Capital of Glass."

Fishing in Ebeltoft

To the east, there are numerous fishing spots along the Kattegat coast. Both sea trout anglers and surf anglers will find great conditions here. To the west lies the large, shallow Ebeltoft Vig. This bay offers numerous spots for lugworm hunting and sea trout fishing. A special highlight is crayfish fishing from the wooden piers. The fishing pier in Ebeltoft even has its own crayfish race track. You can carefully place the caught crayfish into it. Each crayfish has its own race track. As soon as you start the race, the crayfish all move toward the water. Any crayfish that reaches the finish line falls back into the water.
