About the location

The old town of Bakar is one of the cultural highlights of Croatia's Kvarner Bay. Built on a steep hillside above the harbour, it looks back on more than 2,000 years of history. Walking through its narrow streets, you'll discover a fortress with old cannons, Roman remains, historic weighing scales, a charming waterfront promenade and, just outside the town, the traditional dry-stone walls and terraced vineyards that form part of Croatia's UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage.

Among all these historic buildings, one stands out immediately: the Turkish House (Turska kuća). Its oriental appearance contrasts with the surrounding architecture and has made it one of Bakar's most photographed landmarks.

According to local legend, a sailor from Bakar fell in love with a Turkish woman during a voyage to Constantinople. After marrying her, he brought her home, but she became increasingly homesick whenever he was away at sea. To make her feel more at home, he built this unusual house inspired by the architecture of her homeland. Whether the story is true is unknown, but it has become part of Bakar's local folklore.
