Színpompás vadászok – gyurgyalagmegfigyelő torony

Egyik leglátványosabb tollazatú, fokozottan védett madarunk a gyurgyalag, népies nevén „méhevő madár”, egyedi színével, hangjával, szemet gyönyörködtető, légi bravúrjaival hívja fel magára a figyelmet. Tavaszvéghatártól (május, április vége) a meleg és a délnyugati szél hozza, többnyire a 10 pár feletti nyitott kolóniákban. Fészküket merőleges lösz- vagy homokfalakba kaparják, mélyen, akár másfél méteres alagút végén. Két specialitásuk a szitálás és a rovarok lesből való, röptében történő vadászata, repülő rovarokkal, főként darazsakkal, méhekkel táplálkoznak. A gyurgyalag védett állat a világon, mint oly sok. Állománya nagyon érzékeny az aszályra, így a táplálékuk csökkenése miatt fészkeik száma csökkenhet, a fészek rablók (hüllők, menyét) és fészekparaziták növekedése, valamint a kismadarak pusztulása miatt a gyurgyalag kolonizáció a fészkelési idő alatt mindig kényes, még az esős vagy száraz időszak is nehezíti.

A gyurgyalag tényleg a méhek ellensége?

A méhészek gyakran gondolják, hogy igazi kártevő, egyedszámuk miatt ritkán okoznak komolyabb, 10-15%-nál nagyobb veszteséget. Emiatt a méhészek a fészekrablás akadályozásával vagy riasztással próbálkoznak, de a fészkek megrongálása, megsemmisítése, elpusztítása hatóságilag tiltott, mert – ahogy a gyurgyalag – fokozottan védett.

A szemközti partfal madárvilága:

A szemközti partfalban egy gyurgyalag kolónia fészkel, kérjük, ne menjen közel a partfalhoz, ne zavarja a gyurgyalagokat!

• Gyurgyalag: A hazánkba kedvelt madár, szeptemberi vonulásuk alkalmával megkezdik a szubszaharai térség feletti hosszú utazásukat.
• Zöld küllő: A harkályféléktől eltérően nem fekete-fehér, hanem zöldes. Ennek a táplálkozási életmódnak fontos szerepe, ugyanis előszeretettel eledeli a hangyát, a fűben keresgél.
• Szalakóta: Hazánkban szinte csak az Alföldön fordul elő, így Berekfürdő az, aki találkozhat az élénk kék tollazatú madarunkkal.
• Búbosbanka: Könnyen felismerhető hasznos madár, mert a kártékony rovaroktól (pl. lótücsök) megtisztítja az udvart.
• Nagy fakopáncs: Az erdők doktora. Segíti a fák kártevőinek populációját ellenőrizni, így fontos szerepe van az erdők ökológiai egyensúlyának fenntartásában.

Colorful Hunters – Bee-eater Observation Tower

The European bee-eater, popularly known as the "bee-eating bird," is one of our most spectacular, highly protected birds. It draws attention to itself with its unique colors, voice, and eye-catching aerial feats. From the end of spring (May, late April), warmth and the southwestern wind bring them back, mostly in open colonies of over 10 pairs. They dig their nests deep into perpendicular loess or sand walls, at the end of tunnels that can reach up to one and a half meters. Their two specialties are hovering and hunting insects from ambush in mid-air; they feed on flying insects, mainly wasps and bees. The bee-eater is a protected animal worldwide, like so many others. Its population is highly sensitive to drought; thus, due to the decrease in their food supply, the number of nests may decline. Coupled with the rise of nest predators (reptiles, weasels) and nest parasites, as well as the mortality of chicks, bee-eater colonization during the nesting period is always delicate, aggravated by both excessively rainy or dry periods.

Is the European Bee-eater Truly the Enemy of Bees?

Beekeepers often consider them a real pest, but due to their population size, they rarely cause serious losses greater than 10-15%. Because of this, beekeepers try to prevent nest predation or use deterrents, but damaging, vandalizing, or destroying the nests is strictly prohibited by law because – just like the bee-eater itself – they are highly protected.

Birdlife of the opposite bank:

A bee-eater colony nests in the opposite bank; please do not go near the bank wall and do not disturb the bee-eaters!

• European Bee-eater: A popular bird in our country; during their September migration, they begin their long journey over the sub-Saharan region.
• European Green Woodpecker: Unlike other woodpecker species, it is not black and white but greenish. This feeding lifestyle plays an important role, as it prefers to eat ants and searches for them in the grass.
• European Roller: In our country, it occurs almost exclusively in the Great Plain, so Berekfürdő is a place where you can meet this bird with its vivid blue plumage.
• Eurasian Hoopoe: An easily recognizable, useful bird because it cleans the yard from harmful insects (e.g., mole crickets).
• Great Spotted Woodpecker: The doctor of the woods. It helps monitor the population of tree pests, thereby playing an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of forests.
