Dolova – Das verschwundene Dorf

About the location

In the heart of the island of Krk, far away from the lively coastal towns of Krk and Vrbnik, lies one of the island's quietest places: the abandoned village of Dolova. Surrounded by nature, interrupted only by birdsong or the sound of sheep bells, it feels as if time has simply stopped.

It's hard to imagine that people lived ordinary lives here only a few decades ago. They drew water from the village cistern, cultivated their gardens and chatted with their neighbours. Today, vegetation covers the crumbling stone walls, roofs have collapsed and nature is slowly reclaiming the settlement.

Dolova's history reflects the fate of many small villages on Krk. At the end of the 18th century, 128 people lived here according to the census. During the 19th century, the population gradually declined. During World War I, some families temporarily returned to the village, but afterwards many moved to the growing coastal towns or across the bay to Rijeka, which offered better economic opportunities. By 1971 only four inhabitants remained, and in the early 1980s the last resident had left or passed away.

Some abandoned houses still contain everyday objects such as dishes, clothing and even German-language books – silent reminders of the people who once called Dolova home.

The village is just a short walk from the parking area. If you like, continue along the marked circular trail towards the ruins of St. George's Church. From the highest point you'll enjoy a beautiful view towards Rijeka. Please stay on the marked paths and do not enter the unstable buildings.
