🌳 Óriások nyomában – Szigeti Ős 👑

Az Ősplatán egzakt megnevezése közönséges platán (Platanus x acerifolia), más néven juharlevelű platán vagy egyszerűen platán. A pár éve elhelyezett tájékoztató tábla szerint az Ősplatán csak afféle "becenév", amelyre a fa rászolgált. A tábla szerint 1823-ban ültették, tehát már több, mint 200 éves. Vannak, akik idősebbnek tartják, hisz az 1838-as jeges áradást csak a megtermettebb példányok élték túl, mások valamivel fiatalabbnak - de afelől nincs vita, hogy őisinek ősi. Olvastam valahol, hogy már az 1900-as évek elején is faóriásként írtak róla és azóta ugye már eltelt újabb száz év.
A Ősplatánt egyes források szerint József nádor ültette, aki csodálatos parkká varázsolta élete során a szigetett. A nádor igencsak szerette ezt a növénycsaládot. Olyan sokfelé ültették a XIX. században az ő tevékenysége nyomán, hogy ezt az időszakot a kertészetben "platánkorszaknak" nevezik. Ezekből az évtizedekből származnak Budapest legidősebb platánjai.
Itt, a Margit-szigetén szemlátomást jó helyre került. Törzsének körmérete 664 cm, magassága 42 méter, lombkoronája a legszélesebb részén 55 méteres átmérőt is eléri. De nem csak méreteivel és korával emelkedik ki a fajtársai közül, hanem szépségével, formájával. Annyira kivételesen szép példány, hogy már jó ideje mintaként közlik fotóit a kertészeti szaklapok világszerte.
Sajnos minden nagyszerűsége ellenére se vigyáznak rá az emberek. A kertészek persze kitüntetett figyelemmel gondozzák, de a sziget látogatói ettől még gond nélkül vésegetnek a sima törzsbe és ágakba szíveket, neveket, vagy egyszerűen csak rá graffitiznek valami vicces "itt jártunk"-at. A korábbi évtizedekben népszerű tevékenység volt főleg a gyerekek, de a gyereklelkű felnőttek körében is a hintázás a lelógó ágakon. Ma ez már nem megengedett, de fizikai akadálya is van, hiszen mindkét korábban erre alkalmas alsó ág már jó ideje a földre támaszkodik.
Persze bekeríteni kár volna, mert akkor hogyan fognánk körül a nagy törzset, hogyan bámulnánk bele az elképesztő lombba, hogyan karolnánk át az ágakat, simítanánk végig a pikkelyeit, hogyan dőlnénk nyugalmat keresve az oldalának... Nos, tényleg nehéz elragadtatás nélkül szólni róla.

🌳 In the Footsteps of Giants – The Ancient Plane of Margaret Island 👑

The exact botanical name of the Ancient Plane is London plane (Platanus x acerifolia), also known as maple-leaved plane or simply plane tree. According to an information board installed a few years ago, "Ancient Plane" is just a nickname that the tree has well earned. The board states it was planted in 1823, making it over 200 years old. Some consider it even older, believing only larger specimens survived the icy flood of 1838, while others think it is slightly younger—but there is no doubt it is truly ancient. Records show it was already written about as a giant tree in the early 1900s, and another century has passed since then.
According to some sources, the Ancient Plane was planted by Palatine Joseph, who transformed the island into a wonderful park during his lifetime. The Palatine was particularly fond of this plant family. Due to his efforts, so many were planted across the country in the 19th century that horticulturalists refer to this era as the "plane tree era." Budapest's oldest plane trees originate from these decades.
Here on Margaret Island, it clearly found a perfect home. Its trunk circumference is 664 cm, its height reaches 42 meters, and its crown spans a diameter of up to 55 meters at its widest point. Yet, it stands out among its peers not only by its size and age, but also by its sheer beauty and form. It is such an exceptionally beautiful specimen that photos of it have been published as reference models in gardening journals worldwide for a long time.
Unfortunately, despite all its splendor, people do not always treat it with care. While gardeners tend to it with dedicated attention, visitors to the island still carve hearts and names into its smooth trunk and branches, or simply leave graffiti saying "we were here." In earlier decades, swinging on the low-hanging branches was a popular activity among children and young-at-heart adults. Today, this is no longer allowed, and physically impossible, as both lower branches previously suitable for it have rested on the ground for quite some time now.
Of course, fencing it off would be a shame, for then how could we embrace its massive trunk, gaze up into its incredible canopy, hug its branches, touch its scaly bark, or lean against its side seeking tranquility... Indeed, it is truly hard to speak of it without pure admiration.
