With its winding alleyways and the peaceful church square surrounding St Gertraud’s Church, the Innere Pleich has an almost village-like character. Although the bustling city traffic is in the immediate vicinity, hardly any of it can be heard here, allowing visitors to relax in peace right in the heart of the city.
As early as the beginning of the 12th century, numerous tradespeople settled in this area due to the water source. However, the streets were characterised by rather poor living conditions. Until a few decades ago, the neighbourhood was also defined by the slaughterhouse (now the site of the congress centre) and its former reputation as a red-light district, meaning it was not a particularly prestigious area.
Since the demolition of the abattoir in the 1980s, however, this has changed, and today there is no trace left of the former red-light district.
