Saona Island Caribic Dream Cache

Im Südosten der Dominikanischen Republik - vorgelagert dem Fscherdorf Bayahibe - liegt die Isla Saona. Sie gehört neben der Insel Catalina zum Naturpark Parque Nacional del Este, der viele vor dem Aussterben bedrohte Tier- und Pflanzenarten beheimatet (u.a. findet man dort über 112 Vogelarten, Seeschildkröten, Pelikane, Delphine, fliegende Fische und einheimische Säugetiere). Der Anblick der Fauna und Flora ist überwältigend: Schlingpflanzen, die auf ein glitzerndes Meer herabsinken; Höhlen und Grotten, in denen sich sogar schon ein erschöpfter Kolumbus auf seiner zweiten Reise aufgehalten haben soll und eine Vielzahl faszinierender Tiere und Pflanzen. Besucher sollten immer berücksichtigen, daß es sich hier um ein Schutzgebiet für die dominikanische Tier- und Pflanzenwelt handelt und sich entsprechend verhalten.
Jetzt liegt dort auch ein Cache und damit man ihn ohne zu graben oder sonstigen Aufwand finden kann, ist es auch nur ein Micro. Man sollte aber unbedingt einen Stift zum loggen dabei haben. Wer aber vor Ort feststellt, dass er keinen Stift hat macht ein Photo von sich und seinem GPS und schreibt mir ein kurze e-mail und kann dann nach meiner Freigabe ebenfalls loggen. White sand beaches and clear waters, shallow and with spectacular colours and great tranquillity, as well as historic and cultural ruins from the pre-Columbian period, make of Saona Island a place to visit. It is the only inhabited space within the National Park of the East.

Situated on the extreme southeast part of the island, East National Park is 172 square miles with an average annual temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Native trees are prevalent throughout the three life zones of the park, which include subtropical humid, transitional forest and dry forest. The 112 species of birds in the park include the barn owl, brown pelican and the endangered white-crowned pigeon. Mammals that dwell here are the endangered West Indian manatees.

Amphibians and reptiles include lizards, snakes, sea turtles and the rhinoceros iguana. The most popular features of the park are the caves with pre-Columbian drawings and rock carvings, and the island of Saona with its white sandy beaches.

Some of the best diving in the country is in this area, in the National Park, and although local fishermen are still spear fishing, the reef is in good condition and there are plenty of fish, more in some areas than others. Dolphins are often seen from the boat, while underwater you find sharks and rays off Catalina Island, east of Saona, reef sharks at La Parguera, west of Saona, the wreck of St. George close to the Dominicus and fresh water caves inland for experienced divers.
