Geographical center of the Kitzbüheler Alps

20689331468_412b6edd73_n.jpg

The Kitzbühel Alps are a range of mountains in the eastern Alps, in the western part of the shale zone. We are located at the geographical center of this mountain range.

For the Kitzbühel Alps grass mountains are characteristic. This refers to mountains with a typical local grassy vegetation. The vegetation can grow well on the prevailing sedimentary rocks. However, there are also rock formations from dolomite and limestone. An example of this would be the Große Rettenstein nerby our coordinates.

Another characteristic of the Kitzbühel Alps are the courses of the valleys. In the western territory they run from north to south. In the eastern part they run from east to west. The Salzach is responsible for this is the lateral valley furrow. This means a river shaped notch (valley) between two mountain ranges (Kitzbühel Alps and the Hohe Tauern). Many of these furrows usually follow geological faults. In this particular case we speak of the Tauern northern edge fault.

How can we calculate a geographical center?
In the case of the center of the Kitzbühel Alps, the centroid method was used. With this method, the point is determined at which one pin could balance the entire surface. Previously, the outlines of the areas were transferred to paper and they determined the focus. Today, this is far more accurate and  calculated faster using computer models. For this purpose, a digital terrain model is needed first, it can be created by flying over and laser scanning the area. This allows the mass to be determined and thus the geographical center is calculated.
As mentioned earlier, there are different rocks that make up the Kitzbühel Alps. These have a different density, which results in differing weights. Also the structure inside the mountain is different and thus leads to deviations. So we need a model of the inner mountains, so the focus can be calculated more accurately.

Enough of the gray theory, we'd better come to the practical part of the cache. To log the virtual, answer the following questions. Send us the answer via the link in the profile. You can sign immediately, should there be problems with the answers, we will contact you.

1. Have a look around and pay attention to the area around you. You should see a lot of typiscal landscapes for the Kitzbüheler Alps. But there is something different in the south-west, what?

2. Which mountain is 2,366 meters high and which number is it? Which mountain has the number 13?

3. Please take a picture of you or your gpsr, with the stone in the image from the listing, and submit it with your log.

Heute beim Beginn der Wanderung zur Klooalm natürlich am geografischen Mittelpunkt vorbei gekommen. Sind wir tatsächlich die ersten?😉
