Descripción    Deutsch  ·  English (Inglés)

The "Gosaukamm" is renowned for its steep ski-tours in spring. While the masses trek to the Weitkar the cirques towards the Steiglpaß receive far fewer visitors

One of the most remote places but also one of the most beautiful is the Wasserkar which is rarely visited because of its difficult access. It starts at N 47° 30.767 E 013° 30.683 a little bit above the chapel.

Access to the Wasserkar is blocked by a chimney which has a big rock jammed in it. Only rarely can it be skied.

The chimney can be circumnavigated on a hunters path (wire rope, climbing up to grade II) to gain access to the lower cirque ("Kar").

Die Schlüsselstelle am Beginn des Kars

The Linzerturm is already far below us.

Eventually the slope becomes less steep and opens new views ...

... before we climb the summit of the Wasserkarkogel without having to take our skis off.

The descent follows the same route (there are other possibilities too). It is possible to abseil from the top end of the wire rope (50m rope required) if one does not want to climb down.

The cache (doable both in spring and summer - best with skis in May) is located at the end of the steep section.

It is well guarded by the Wasserkarturm.

Unfortunately the coordinates are not very precise (several measurements at different times all resulted in different North-coordinates) so please use the spoilerpictures.

ATTENTION:
This is an alpine cache which requires experience and care. Climbing up to UIAA grade II.

Only attempt it when snow conditions are stable (May)!

Beware of falling rocks !

Start early (time to summit approx. 4-5 hours)

Wer in diesem Gelände Haken braucht, sollte besser gleich umdrehen ...

@ucho1: Sorry to hear that you did not manage this cache. The metal rope is not really needed to climb up as the climb is never more difficult than UIAA grade II. Of course you need to be comfortable in a mixture of grass and rock as is to be expected on a hunters path. And don't forget the steep snowfields higher up which don't disappear until August or even later! Abseiling from the (not very reliable) lower endpoint is not normally necessary unless you decide to go back. If you really decide to abseil from the TOP end of the metal rope (even though the climb down is fairly easy), a 50m rope is sufficient to get you to below the big block at the beginning of the climb. If you feel a need for pitons, I recommend that you don't attempt this cache ...

We have to report DNF, because we have had no proper climbing material with us.
Some hints for next cachers:
- The iron rope is ripped from one fix. There are cca 20m of vertical iron rope at two corrode iron fixs now.
- The single 50m rope is not enough for abseil down from beginning of the iron rope during summer.
- Bring some hooks with you. There is a breakable rock mixed with grass.
