Castle

English:

A Traditional in the lower part of the Kallikratis- Gorge with a nice view to Fragokastelo. Its worth to walk the Gorge up to the end and take a refreshment in Kallikrati.

The Castle was build in 1371 and is the oldest Venician buildings on Crete. First it was named Agios Nikitas. Because of its strangeness the castle was renamed by the Cretes in ?Frankonian Castle?
In the year 1828 the Sfakians defended the Castle with 700 men against 8000 men of the Turkish Army. They lost the Battle. Heroic of course.
Around the 17 of May there might come a Ghostarmy heavily armed on horses and feet.

The Kallikartis-Gorge was in former Times an important Trail to serve the upper Villages. Today you can see pieces of the old way made of stones and drystone walls.

Start at the Kastell at N 35°10.958 E 024°14.073. From here you have to cross the plateau of Fragokastelo on the E4 hiking trail.
A bit easyer you can start in Kapsodasos at N 35°12.251 E 024°14.176. Follow the yellow-black and red Marks.

The Cache lies on a place at the Kallikratis-Gorge from which you can see the Castle of the Franks fully last time when you go up.
Maybe the Satellites are not good in sight because of the gorges walls. So take the spoiler with you. If you stay at the cache, behind you is eventually the last sanctuary of the sfakians.
Dont leave the Way! it is dangerous. About 5m ahead ther is a small tree where you can rest.

Small note on cache maintenance: There is a local cache guardian. Name and contact info on file with geocaching.com.

Viel Spaß wünschen die G-e-c-k-o-s

Found 31 May 2015, 12:19 Nufringer found the geocache

This was a perfect little hike for the early evening. I parked a bit above the village where a path leads down into the gorge. I expected it to be a rather flat walk and was surprised by the elevation. But as it was late, the temperature was OK for this.
At the coordinates it took me only a short time to discover the box.

Thanks for showing this place, Nufringer

We walked down from Kallikratis. Somehow we found the goat's path to gorge. View amazing. It took us long time to find the hiding place because of poor gps reception. Thanks!

(Nachgeloggt von GC)

For us two, being together over 110 years old, the terrain felt more like 4*rating. Nevertheless we found the cache at high noon and enjoyed the impressive gorge.

The coordinates were rather precise, our Garmin led us to a spot only 5 meters away from the cache. We have to admit however, that we read the spoiler, after searching in the blazing sun for quite some time.

P.S. shouldn't it rather be Castle of the Franconians than Castle of the Franks?
