The SightSeeingVirtualCaches Series

SightSeeingVirtualCaches are virtual caches meant to show you places of interest. The caches in this series are OC-Only and can only be logged with a password, which you will have to find at the cache location. You are very welcome to attach a photo as well, but it is not a requirement. You will find further caches from the SightSeeingVirtuals series through this search

(Text adapted from Wikipedia)

The Djemaa el-Fna is a square and market place in Marrakesh's medina quarter (old city).

The place is the main square of Marrakesh, used equally by locals and tourists. During the day it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, youths with chained Barbary apes, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers who will pose for photographs for tourists. As the day progresses the entertainments on offer change: the snake charmers depart, and in the afternoon and evening the square becomes more crowded, with dancing-boys, story-tellers, magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As dark descends the square fills with dozens of food-stalls, and the crowds are at their height.

The square is edged along one side by the Marrakesh souk, the traditional North African markets which service both the common daily needs of the people of the city, and the tourist trade.

In 2001, the square was inscribed on UNESCO's list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity as the first such locality.

To log this virtual, simply go to the coordinates and find the UNESCO plaque. The codeword to log is the last word of the line beginning with "serpents" (in the French text).

You can't visit Marrakech without passing through Jemaa el-Fna, so I visited it and stopped at the sign. No snake charmers in sight today.

Hvala za zakladek! / Thank you for the cache! / Shukran! / Merci!

This is my second visit to Morocco but the first one as a geocacher, so I found a few caches and added a new country to my list.
