The most commonly known salt is sodium chloride (NaCl) as we use it daily to improve the taste of our food. But where do we get it from? (supermarket is the wrong answer). Near Tigaki (Tigkaki), in the direction of Marmari you will find the Salt Lake Alikes (Alikis, Alykes). Up to about mid of 20^th century salt was produced in this lake (up to 20.000 centner annually). Now you will still see some salt on the bottom of the see (picture), some of the former, old buildings and remains from the salt pans as well as special animals (e.g. flamingo) and plants (which need salt for growing). However, in this EarthCache we will concentrate on the production of the mineral salt.

Fundamentals on sea salt production
Sea salt is obtained by evaporating of seawater. A saltern is used to collect sea water which is dilute brine. The concentration of the salt needs to be increased by evaporating of the water. This can be done by heating on fire. Then the concentrated slurry is washed with sea water so that mud and impurities (sea water contains many other kinds of salt which partly taste bitter) are settled out. Now the final evaporation follows e.g. over a fire. Wood or peat was commonly used in northern Europe (e.g. such salt production ended on the German islands Halligen in 1782 only). http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallig Nowadays about 20-30% of the worldwide used salt is made from seawater.

Why was sea salt produced at the lake Alikes in Tigaki?
The salt lake in Tigaki is endorheic. An endorheic basin (also called terminal or closed basin) is a closed drainage basin that retains water and allows no outflow in other external bodies of water, such as rivers or oceans, but converges instead into lakes that equilibrate through evaporation (for example: Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Etosha pan). Normally, the water of a lake flows out through rivers and ultimately ending up in the ocean. However, in Tigaki, the water of the lake Alikes can not leave this lake, in fact, the water of the ocean flows into this lake. As the water is constantly evaporating due to the heat from the sun, the concentration of salt is increasing resulting into dilute brine. This is the natural starting point for the production of sea salt.

What is still to be seen from the salt production?
At the coordinates you will find a bridge and two former machine buildings (question 3 refers to it). You will also see the three water encroachments which were used to control the amount of sea water flowing into the lake (question 1 referring to this). If you follow the road until its end and the water level of the lake is low you will see the remaining parts of the salt pans (salt evaporation ponds) especially lines of wood posts which formed the levees used to separate the pans (my photo was taken in October). Those salt evaporating ponds (also called saltern or salt pan) are shallow artificial ponds. The sea water was fed into those ponds and water was drawn out through natural evaporation which allows the salt to be subsequently harvested.

1. Why was it important to control the amount of seawater flowing into the lake / the salt pans?
2. Why was the salt production in Tigaki less energy consuming than in northern Europe?
3. How many round windows (with screen bars) does the eastern engine house have ? (house at the coordinates above, also shown on the picture below, all four walls together)

Bei unserem heutigen Strandspaziergang haben wir auch diesen interessanten Lost Place aufgesucht. Einsam ist man hier allerdings nicht und obwohl der See zur Hälfte ausgetrocknet ist, wird er von tausenden Vögel bevölkert. Flamingos waren aber leider keine vor Ort. Diese haben den See in diesem Jahr wohl bereits im Mai verlassen

Today we went on a bike trip and also circled the salt lake. Very interesting! Yesterday we saw it from Zia. The salt partly looks like a blanket of snow - crazy at 35 degrees in the shade.
We weren't the only ones who used the little house as a shady spot.

Den diesjährigen Sommerurlaub verbrachte ich mit dem Juniorcacher auf einem Krümel in der Ägäis namens Kos und es wurde die perfekte Mischung aus Erholung und Action. Durch Geocaching und mit unseren temporären Cachermobil sahen wir Orte, die wohl vielen Besuchern der Insel verborgen bleiben werden. Dafür danke ich allen Ownern.
Auch hier ließ sich alles super rausfinden und interessant ist dieser Ort ja sowieso. Die Antworten habe ich zusammen mit dem Juniorcacher Knolli648 per Message-Center an den Owner verschickt.

Etwas mit Salzgewinnung ist immer interessant. Daher haben wir diesen Earthcache gleich zu Beginn unseres Urlaubs aufgesucht. Leider ist die beste Zeit dieser Anlage vorbei. Dennoch hat sich der Besuch hier als Glücksfall erwiesen. Natürlich mussten wir auch den rostigen Bagger besichtigen und haben bei dieser Gelegenheit einen schönen Strandabschnitt entdeckt.

Tag 5 Das ist ja mal interessant später bekamen wir noch die Info das man sogar Flamingos hier treffen kann wir leider nicht wohl die falsche Jahreszeit aber so was habe ich in echt noch nie gesehen und interessant mehr darüber zu erfahren.

Inzwischen war die Hälfte unseres ersten Griechenland Urlaub erreicht und so wurde es Zeit nach einigen Unternehmungen, viel Essen, zahlreichen Cocktails und Stunden am Meer die Insel auf eigene Faust mit einem gemieteten Buggy zu erkunden.

Dieser interessante Earthcache sollte auf unserer heutigen Tour unsere erste Station sein. Es war interessant zu sehen, wie hier einst riesige Mengen von Salz abgebaut wurden. Bis vor wenigen Jahrhunderten galt es noch als das „weiße Gold“ und war bei weitem nicht so selbstverständlich, wie es das heute für uns der Fall ist. Zu aufwändig war es damals, um es in solch rauen Mengen wie heute zu gewinnen da die Techniken noch nicht so effizient waren.

Leider reichte unsere Zeit wegen dem gemieteten Buggy und unserer Vorhaben nicht um jeden Winkel zu erkunden wie ich es gerne gewollt hätte. Doch für einige schöne Fotos und das Sammeln der hoffentlich richtigen Antworten auf die Fragen reichte es noch… [;)]

Today we rent a car to drive round the island and for sure:to find some geocaches.
This one was the last one. It's a wonderful place und funny to see,how some british muggles tried to get their stuck beachbuggy out of the saltlake using the jeep...Thank you for showing us this wonderful place.

wärend unseres Urlaubes hier auf KOS gut gefunden.
Diese schöne Insel hatten wir uns vor einem halben Jahr als Ziel für unsere 2.Hochzeitsreise nach 25 Jahren ausgesucht. Dieser Ort und der Cache hier, waren unser heutiges Tagesziel. Wir sind die 2km vom Hotel hier her gelaufen und es hat uns gut gefallen.
Danke für das Zeigen dieses tollen Platzes.

Auf einer von unseren täglichen Strand-Jogger-Runden haben wir den See und die tolle Location besucht. Ein tolles Naturschauspiel.

Nach einem kleinen Fußmarsch von Marmari aus immer am Strand lang, war der See schnell erreicht. Leider aktuell eine eher unspektakuläre Brache und eher ein LP. Schade da die Geschichte des Ortes lehrreich und interessant ist.

Nach einer Strandwanderung von Marmari aus den interessanten Salzsee besucht. Der ist ja ordentlich groß und muss auch im Winter toll aussehen, wenn ihn Vögel und Flamingos besuchen.
