Found 08 March 2006 Edorian found the geocache

Found 28 August 2005 cezanne found the geocache

Since I have an appointment in the afternoon, I could not go for one of the caches on my to-do list which are farther away than this one. So I decided to give this cache a try although the spoiler picture and the 3.5* terrain rating caused a lot of scepticism whether I will be able to access the cache.

As I did not want to come by car, but do not own a MTB, I decided to go to P2 by bike and walk from there to the cache. Going to P2 seemed more comfortable to me than to P1 as P1 appears to lie higher up and my phsyical condition is not that good at the moment. The bike ride was nice except the part of the Mariatrosterstrasse which is unpaved at the moment - there are so many holes. Not very pleasant with a normal bike (neither with a normal car BTW).

The walk up to the cache was somewhat steep in some parts, but easy. I came across a (former) small quarry which appears to be used as barbecue location nowadays. Today I did not meet, however, a single person on my way up and down the Hauenstein.

After a short walk I arrived at the summit. Due to the precise description, it was clear to my at once where the cache had been hidden, but the way to the cache did not look that appealing to me. It took me quite some time and a considerable effort to dare to access the cache. Crossing over to the hideout was not at all easy for me - not being able to fully rely on my left leg, offered challenges both on the physical and the psychical level. Finally I managed to find a way to approach the cache which seemed sufficiently safe to me.

Having arrived at the cache, my next problem was to open that damn glass container. That turned out to be even more difficult than yesterday at Schloss Plankenwarth. Since I was not standing comfortably, I had even more troubles. I was quite relived when I finally managed to open the jar. I did not even have a camera with me - so there would have been no way at all to prove that I was at the cache, something that would have been very disappointing for me after having had to overcome quite some barriers to reach the cache.

For going back to the path, I chose another more direct route and climbed up the slope as this seemed easier for me as taking the same approach backwards that I had taken to the cache. This turned out to be a good decision.

In case you come with smaller children, please be very careful close to the hideout. The area there can be quite dangerous. I would not dare to go for this cache in Winter when there is snow and ice (only due to the last meters to the hideout). Personally I would have preferred a different hideout which is easier to access as in this area there exist plenty of such places and the hiding place is not that spectacular. On the other hand, most Styrian cachers are young guys or like to climb around - so from this point of view the hiding place fits the audience well.

After having found the cache, I went back the same way I had come. Shortly before I arrived at my bike, I had a very nice view to the pilgrimage church of Maria Trost (a church which I do not like that much from inside, but from far apart it looks quite impressive). Before returning home, I decided to extend my bike ride a little bit. I continued to follow Foellingerstrasser, passed the inn Sternwirt and went to the Josefhof. There it occured to me that I could go to the administration and ask for a map showing the location of the posts of the permanent orienteering course around the Josefhof area (see also Gert's Josefhof cache). (For my funny experiences there see my extra note.) There I experienced a funny story: The woman at the administration counter told me that she will ask her boss to be of assistance to me, but told me that I will have to wait a few minutes - she was busy with people who arrived today for some health and cure programms.
After a while the woman returned and told me that she will now go to her boss and tell her that I want to talk to her about a job at the Josefhof. Apparently "Fixposten" (the German word for fixed posts) meant nothing to her. After a more detailed explanation, she still felt that asking her boss would be the best idea. After the while her boss arrived. This woman was kind to me too, but could not help me. At first she wanted to convince me that the permament course is only for guests of the Josefhof, but as I told her that the underlying map is not a map belong to the Josefhof, she was not sure any more and referred me to the head of the sport scientist group at the Josefhof and told me that I might call him. I am not sure whether I will do that sometime.

Thanks for another nice motivation to go outside and have some physical activity.

Met grizz-gps in Andritz, then we went to the location of the ex-witchforest cache by bike and then up a forest road to P1. From that point it was rather straight-forward, we left the bikes 50m away from the cache location.
