The Bonn traject in the river

Where the trains were carried by ferries

A short family-friendly Mini-Multi about an interesting story out of the early days of the Bonn railways, when trains moved over the river Rhine via a ferry.

In 1869 together with the extension of the railway on the right side of the river Rhine coming from the South up to Oberkassel, a new interconnection with the that time already existing Bonn railway left side of the river Rhine has been opened up.

As there was no bridge at Oberkassel, the trains had to be carried across the river via a ferry, a so called traject. As a complete train incl. locomotive was too heavy for the ferry, all the waggons were undocked for the transport and reconnected again to a different engine at the other side of the river. The crossing took round about 20 minutes incl. (un-)docking procedures.

The ferry business was in operation basically until beginning of World War 1 and was finally shut down completely end of 1918 (incl. dismantling of the shore constructions). During the best year 1873, 93.107 waggons and 274 locomotives have been carried over the river Rhine.

About the cache:

Your vehicle can be parked best at the Joseph-Schumpeter-Allee, at the parking area opposite of the Telekom or in the car park Bonner Bogen (see waypoints). From there it's only a few minutes walk. Who comes by bicycle can drive directly right up to the start.

At the starting point you will find an information board about the history of the Bonn-Oberkassel traject described above (unfortunately also only in german language). At this location in the former times the rails went down towards the river Rhine. Take a look at the board and answer the following questions to determine the coordinates for the final:

1. Which three digit yellow number can be found aside the blue pole?
A = first digit of the three digit number
B = second digit of the three digit number
C = third digit of the three digit number

2. Which four digit year date can be found below the left map extract at the bottom of the green board?
D = first digit of the four digit number
E = second digit of the four digit number
F = third digit of the four digit number
G = fourth digit of the four digit number

The location of the container can now be calculated as follows:

Hint: You can open the hiding-place with a little hook on the right side. Please open the cover carefully and close it afterwards again in the same way.

Additional info: Who comes with kids will find at the parking area opposite of the Telekom building ("Haribo ship") and at the Rhine banks at the Kameha hotel also two nice playgrounds.

Dieser Cache ist seit mehr als 12 Monaten „momentan nicht verfügbar“; daher wird er automatisch archiviert. Er kann vom Besitzer jederzeit instand gesetzt und reaktiviert werden.

So, heute waren wir mal kurz vor Ort und mussten leider feststellen, dass die Dose samt Logbuch tatsächlich komplett entwendet wurde. Echt schade, wie respektlos manche Leute sind...

Ich muss mir jetzt erst mal ein paar Gedanken machen, ob ich den Standort des Verstecks beibehalte oder mir lieber was neues suche. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit besteht durchaus, dass die "Täter" wiederkommen.

Hier muss ich wohl erst mal nach dem Rechten schauen. Bis dahin bleibt der Cache erst einmal deaktiviert.

06. mayo 2016 Wuchtel ha encontrado el geocache

Auf dem Heimweg von einer Radtour "rund um den Rhein" kam ich auch an diesem historischen Ort vorbei, diesmal mit dem festen Vorsatz, nun endlich auch einmal den dazugehörigen Minimulti zu absolvieren. Die Fragen waren schnell beantwortet und so stand dem (Be-)Suchen der dazugehörigen Dose nichts mehr im Wege.

Das sehr schön gemachte Cacheversteck war auch schnell gefunden, leider war es "ausgeräumt". Ich habe mir erlaubt, zumindest einen Logzettel zu hinterlassen. Hier müsste mal nach dem Rechten gesehen werden.

Bei meinem heutigen Bonn Besuch habe ich auch die alten Züge gesucht.
Diese gibt es natürlich nicht mehr zu sehen. Dafür fand ich eine schöne Infotafel mit kreativer Halterung.
Nachdem die Werte notiert waren ging es zum Finale. Dort fand ich überraschenderweise ein sehr schön gemachtes Finale.
Für das Gesamtwerk vergebe ich sehr gerne eine Empfehlung.

Mein Mann und ich wollten heute unbedingt eine Runde spazieren gehen und als wir losfuhren war es auch noch trocken . Auf dem Weg dahin fing es an zu regnen... sind dann aber trotzdem los gegangen....

Ich möchte mich beim Owner für den Cache bedanken. Eure Dose hat mir sehr gut gefallen..

Schöne kurze Runde mit dreistem Final (allerdings aktuell nicht von Arachnophobikern machbar), informativ und alles. War schon seit Publish auf meiner TODO-Liste, aber irgendwie muß ich mich bei Multis, selbst Kurzmultis, immer überwinden… heute paßte alles: Wetter, Zeit, Lust, Muggelfaktor, Ort, … danke!

Entgegen meiner sonstigen Gewohnheiten habe ich mir heute nach Feierabend ausnahmsweise mal wieder einen OC only Cache vorgenommen. Denn Caches rund um die Geschichte der Eisenbahn gehören zu meinen besonderen Interessen und da darf ein Cache zum Bonner Trajekt natürlich nicht fehlen. Und ich musste main Kommen wahrlich nicht bereuen! Denn im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen OC Caches war dieser Cache top gepflegt und schön gemacht.

Herzlichen Dank für den schönen Cache zu einem interessanten Thema.

Interesting story. The final coordinates were quickly calculated during my lunch break walk. Initially I thought the coordinates were a bit unprecise, but it turned out that the CO had just been very cheeky - and the coords were spot on!

The wooden box has been taken over as breeding ground for small spiders. They're harmless but some people may find it icky to log this.

Thanks for making this cache available in English as well.

Heute mal eine besondere Mittagspause, um einen besonderen Cache zu finden. Im Kopfrechnen bin ich normalerweise schwach, aber dieses mal hat es auf Anhieb geklappt. Ein schönes Versteck mit tollem Cachebehälter, alles mit Hingabe und Sorgfalt gemacht! Vielen Dank!

Nette, kleine Aufgabe, die heute zu einem Durchbrechen der allabendlichen Routine und einer alternative Route für den Heimweg führte. Endlich mal wieder am Rhein entlang. Vor Ort waren die Koors schnell ermittelt und die riesige, prall gefüllte Dose schnell geborgen.
