Heck cattle instead of tanks - the coast heath in Cuxhaven

Away from the tourist crowds, in the south-west of Cuxhaven, you find one of the largest coast heath areas of the North Sea coast: the Cuxhavener Küstenheide.

Until a few years ago, up to 90000 soldiers yearly trained in this area. Today, wild horses, wisents and heck cattle dominate this region. They shall prevent 340ha of heath from turning into shrubland.

Even during the military usage of this area, it was an important habitat for rare species, because specific spots were explicitely excluded from the usage by the soldiers.

Nowadays, nothing reminds of past days - except a small "monument" at the coordinates of this listing.

This cache is not a fast point just for your statistic. Please take some time and enjoy the beautiful landscape. You should take a binucular with you - not for searching for the cache, but to watch the animals.
