The Rhine Valley between the Black Forest/Vosges and the Odenwald/Pfälzer Wald is not a natural river valley. About 50 million years ago the Earth's crust was broken into several blocks, which were downdropped between two main faults.
This rift slowly filled with marine and river deposits. In the meantime, the downdropped block under Mannheim has been covered with several km of younger deposits.
The Bergstrasse in the east and the Hardt in the west form the distinct shoulders of the rift valley.
Traces of the movement of the blocks can be seen in the Leferenz quarry: the conspicuous rock spur in the quarry consists of fault gouge, a rock powder formed by the friction between two sides of an active fault. (Source: Infoboard at the viewpoint)
At the coordinates, you'll find a view point with a nice view over the Rhine Valley. On the lower left of the big infoboard, you'll find an address. The name of the road together with the number (e.g. "Bahnhofstraße 1") form the password you need for logging this cache.

Nach vielen Jahren war ich heute mal wieder im Steinbruch Leverenz. Den habe ich ganz aus den Augen verloren. Ist ja voll schön hier. Und erst die Aussicht! Dank dieses OC-Caches bin ich mal wieder hier gewesen. Danke dafür.

Eine schöne wanderung unternahmen wir an diesen Wochenende. Von dem Ausblick konnten wir leider nicht so viel genießen, weil es doch sehr voll war und wir nicht lange blieben. Aber das Passwort habe ich mir notiert, sodass ich diesen Cache loggen kann.
