Neuss is one of the oldest cities in Germany, its

beginnings dating back 2,000 years to the time of

the Roman Empire. As early as 16 B.C., during the

reign of Emperor Augustus, the Romans set up a

military camp south of what is now the old part of

the city. Over the centuries this trading post has

become a city with a thriving economy where

tradition and progress go hand in hand. Today,

archeological finds and historical buildings continue

to reflect the eventful and varied past of the ancient

town..

Signs of history: Basilica, the ‘Upper Gate´,

‘Windmill Tower´, the oldest house of 1571, the Renaissance

town house ‘Em Schwatte Päd´, Church

Advocate´s House and ‘Zeughaus´ (armory) - a former
