Standing at the end of Skólavörðustígur street and in front of Hallgrímskirkja church is one of the best-known landmarks in Reykjavík, the statue of Leifur Eiríksson. He look to the west to the Ocean.

The statue which was donated to the Icelandic nation by the US Congress in 1930 to commemorate the millennium of the Alþingi. Alþingi was first convened at Þingvellir in the year 930 A.D. Parliamentary meetings were during the time of the Vikings, with the last meeting held in 1798. While the statue was presented as a gift to Iceland in the year 1930 it was not until the summer of 1932 that it had been erected in its current location. The statue was unveiled on July 17 1932 by the US Ambassador to Iceland.
At the time Hallgrimskirkja church had not yet been built: Its construction only started in 1945. Which means the statue had been standing in its current location for 13 years when the construction of Hallgrímskirkja even began.

Leifur is probably the best known hero of Viking age Iceland, the first European to arrive in America:
Leifur’s voyage to America in the year 1000 preceded the Christopher Columbus’ voyage by roughly half a millennia.
According to the Sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement at Vinland, tentatively identified with the Norse L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada.

Opening hours and the tower

Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in the country, and towers over the centre of Reykjavík.
Its 73-metre-high tower provides a wonderful 360° view over all Reykjavík, the mountains around and the ocean streaching west to Greenland and the Americas. Because of this, the tower is among the most visited tourist destinations in Reykjavík.

Admission

Adults: ISK 1000 / Children: ISK 100 (ages 7-16)
Tickets are sold in the church shop.
Access to the tower is only by lift. At the top there are a few steps to the open-air viewing platform.

Opening hours

Winter (October – April): 09:00 – 17:00. Tower closes 16:30.
Summer (May – September): 09:00 – 21:00. Tower closes 20:30.
The tower is closed on Sundays from 10:30 – 12:15 during mass at 11:00.

Hallgrímskirkja is an active, working church and sometimes we may close without notice, especially due to weddings or funerals.

Mit AIDAaura für 1,5 Tage in Reykjavik und natürlich mit eskat77 die Stadt zu Fuß erkundet. An diesem Cache sind wir auch vorbei gekommen und haben die Dose gefunden.

Finally, back in Iceland after 10 years!
Iceland was the first foreign country that I cached in. Now the active volcano brought me back to this wonderful country!
On the first evening after arriving in Iceland I went on a walk through a part of Reykjavik.

And of course I also took a look at Hallgrimskirkja. While doing so I also shot the required webcam photo for this cache.

In a forum an owner advertised his opencaching caches these days. Hey, some are in Iceland where I was only a few days ago. I did not expect Opencaching.de caches in Iceland so I didn't look for them.
Please accept my photo although it is not from the webcam. I think the meaning of the cache is fulfilled.

To be able to log at least one OC listing in Iceland, we (Nelly 01 and me) even returned here after we had simply forgotten to take the picture on our first visit. We went to the place and tried to take a picture with our smartphone. I failed to save the picture, though - even some tricks I had used at other webcams had failed, and I didn't find out at the spot how to take a screenshot with my phone. So we finally ended up with taking a photo of the phone display with the photo of the webcam. We're the couple with the large blue bag.

All the other OC listings, both the webcams and the two lonely traditionals, were too much off our routes.

Mich von ekorren bequatschen lassen nochmal zurück zu gehen um diesen Cache zu machen. Er hatte Schwierigkeiten das Bild entsprechend abzuspeichern, wir haben erst sehr viel später heraus gefunden wie es geht. Ob es das wert war?
