Kis Balaton

About the location

Kis-Balaton (“Little Balaton”) is a nature reserve southwest of Lake Balaton, which was separated from Lake Balaton by natural silting processes and human intervention (drainage around 1920, renaturation in the 1980s). Thanks to the special fauna (water areas, reeds, water lilies, marsh meadows, ash and alder meadows, etc.), around 250 species of birds live here, some of which are threatened with extinction, including wild geese, cormorants, bitterns, common terns, and, and, and... It is also a paradise for anglers. The lake also ensures that its big brother does not collapse despite the large number of bathers by supporting the natural regeneration and filtering processes after the natural inflows and outflows were no longer sufficient to clean the lake due to pollution and the influx of visitors. 

The main attractions are the buffalo reserve near Zalakomár (Hungarian water buffalo) with rest areas and a lookout tower and the freely accessible island of Kányavár with its lookout towers, which can be reached via the impressive three-arch bridge (parking is chargeable during the day (!)). The area can also be explored well on a car tour (approx. 65 km) or, even better, on a bike tour.

At the given coordinates there is an information board about Laki István-Zsilip. The simple sum of the 8 digits (2 years) under his name is the log password. Attach a photo to your log of yourself or an object you have brought with you at the given waypoint (a beautiful lookout point) or another beautiful place on the Kis Balaton of your choice.

The other waypoint points to a parking lot that is free throughout.
