NFC high up on the Berneuse (NFC Cache)

View

You can reach the 2048 meter high Berneuse either by cable car from Leysin or on foot from various directions. Up here there is a revolving restaurant, various art and game installations and above all a great view (when it's not in revision 😆). A visit is therefore worthwhile (ok, not necessarily because of the restaurant).

There is also the NFC cache "La Berneuse (NFC) GC7DEM3" here. However, the coordinates of a normal container are simply stored on the NFC tag for that one. Logging is done classically on paper. This inspired me to hide a "real"™ NFC cache up here as well. One where you store your log on the NFC tag.

NFC Cache

This cache is an NFC cache. NFC stands for "Near Field Communication" and describes a radio technology over a very short distance (normally a few centimeters). At the coordinates you will find an NFC tag instead of a container. This is a small sticker that contains a microchip and an antenna. Contact can be made with the tag using a device that supports NFC. Many current smartphones have the corresponding capability. The smartphone is brought near the tag, it receives power from the smartphone and a brief data exchange takes place.
Further details about NFC can be found, e.g., on Wikipedia.

Find the Tag

Go or drive up to the Berneuse and head to the coordinates. There is a post to which the tag is attached.

Logging this Cache

With this NFC cache, the logbook is located on the NFC tag. For the cache to count as found you must

  • store the preceding log and add it to your online log
  • save your cacher name and the current date on the NFC tag.

The easiest way to do this is with an NFC-capable Android device on which you have installed the app "NFCMessageBoard". With the pre-installed apps on phones it probably won't work.

Using the NFCMessageBoard App
  1. Install the app via F-Droid or Play Store.
  2. Read the tag by bringing the NFC sensor of your device close to the tag with the app open. You will now see the existing log entries.
  3. Enter your short log text and your nickname. Check that the checkbox next to "Enable Timestamp" is set.
  4. Click "ADD MSG" and bring the NFC sensor close to the tag again.
  5. Your entry is now saved. You can control this by reading the tag again.
Alternative Apps

You can also log with another app. Just make sure that you first read the text and save it on your device and then enter your log on the tag.

Errors

If something goes wrong and the data was overwritten or deleted on the tag, it is not too tragic. Please just give me a short notice via mail or "Needs Maintenance" log.

Alternative Logging

If reading the last log and/or writing your log doesn't work, just send me the serial number of the tag. This can also be read out with various apps.

And Now

Have fun logging and enjoying the view!
