Neckarinsel Tübingen

About 1 km in length and almost exactly straight, the Neckar island is certainly one of the most popular and most beautiful places in Tübingen. Here you'll find the famous view on the riverfront of the old city, with castle, the oldest university buildings and the main church "Stiftskirche".

The island is artificial and became an island in 1910, when together with construction of the power plant and the railway to Herrenberg a channel was dug parallel to the river. Floodings had been a big problem in the Neckar valley before.

Much older and possibly the oldest one of its kind in Germany is the plane tree alley in the eastern half of the island. According to an often-told legend it was planted by the last executioner of Tübingen - however, this legend was proven false a few years ago. The trees had in fact been planted in 1828, four years after his death.

To the west connects, after the memorial of Friedrich Silcher (a famous local poet) the "sigh forest", nicknamed so for being a famous romantic spot for just as well as the wannabe-poets trying to forge their lovesickness into verses.

You'll find the box close to the road bridge "Alleenbrücke" in a large tree stump.


Attention: There may be many muggles. Also, there aren't many public parking possiblities, so better use your own feet.
