Seit 1989 wird der Ötscherlandexpress als Museumsbahn geführt und dampft mit Einheimischen und Touristen gleichermaßen entlang der historischen „Bergstrecke Ybbstalbahn“.
Mit gemütlichen 25 km/h brummt die historische Dampflok (oder Diesellok) durch die wildromantische Landschaft. Als steilste Schmalspurbahn Österreichs verbindet der Ötscherlandexpress Kienberg-Gaming, Lunz am See und Göstling an der Ybbs und lädt zur historischen Erlebnisfahrt. Seit der Streckenerweiterung nach Göstling im Jahr 2013 gilt er als die längste Museumsbahn Österreichs.
