Pesnica - die Faust - the Fist

As you approach the Makljen Pass (1123m), you will see the spooky remains of the ancient partisan monument "Pesnica" perched on an adjacent hill (= the fist).

The can lies on the southern edge of the ruin under a concrete chunk with the words "There is no weapon strong enough to destroy". Right next to it is the big concrete chunk with a big red heart.

The monument was erected in socialist Yugoslavia in honor of the defenders of the homeland in the Neretva battle in the winter of 1943.

It was inaugurated by Tito on the 35th anniversary of the battle and survived undamaged the Bosnian war with its extensive destruction and 100 000 dead. 1998 here was a point of observation for British UN soldiers. A few hundred meters further on the pass road was a border checkpoint of the Bosnian-Croatian Federation.

2019

Five years after the war, on the night of 12th to 13th November 2000, the 12.5 m high monument was blown up by unknown perpetrators. Only the reinforced concrete skeleton remained, while the outer stone shell was completely torn apart. After the collapse of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia due to the increasingly violent Serbian dominance, it can be assumed that the monument was no longer wanted by Bosnians and Croats. Investigations to the authors did not exist.

Since 2010, the ruin is officially a National Monument of Bosnia.
