A veces, en nuestros viajes, nos encontramos con un lugar que nos conmueve de una forma especial – la torre de agua de Son Gual en Mallorca es uno de esos lugares.

Lo que antes era un simple regulador de presión de agua se ha convertido, en 2006 gracias a la visión artística de Carlos "Charly" Galeano, en un emblema inconfundible de la isla. Su objetivo no era simplemente colocar una obra de arte, sino fundirla con el paisaje – como si siempre hubiese estado allí.

La obra lleva por título "El hombre y las carreteras". Con más de 26 metros de altura y una superficie pintada de 250 metros cuadrados, se alza visible junto a la carretera entre Palma y Manacor.

Antes de convertirse en obra artística, la torre fue cuidadosamente desoxidada y tratada con pintura anticorrosiva. Para el acabado final se utilizó pintura náutica resistente a la intemperie – porque esta obra está hecha para perdurar. Con la ayuda de muchas personas comprometidas, se creó una escultura que hoy está reconocida como patrimonio cultural oficial de Mallorca.

Quien pasa por allí puede sentir la presencia silenciosa de esta estructura. Se integra con el paisaje – y al mismo tiempo, resalta. En particular, los niños se sienten atraídos por su forma inusual: popularmente, la torre se conoce como "Chupa-Chup" (o Pirulí) – en referencia al famoso caramelo que recuerda su silueta. Pero lo que muchos no saben es que originalmente era simplemente un dispositivo técnico.

Hoy, es mucho más. Es una expresión de creatividad, un homenaje al poder del arte – y un compañero silencioso y digno al borde del camino.

Nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a Charly Galeano – por su visión inspiradora, su valentía creativa y la profunda humanidad que aún vive en su obra. Manchmal begegnet uns auf Reisen ein Ort, der uns auf eine besondere Weise berührt – der Wasserturm von Son Gual auf Mallorca ist so ein Ort.

Was einst ein schlichter Wasser-Druckregler war, wurde 2006 durch die künstlerische Vision von Carlos "Charly" Galeano zu einem unverwechselbaren Wahrzeichen der Insel. Sein Ziel war es, Kunst nicht einfach aufzustellen, sondern mit der Landschaft zu verschmelzen – als wäre sie immer schon da gewesen.

Das Werk trägt den Namen "El hombre y las carreteras". Es erhebt sich mit über 26 Metern Höhe und einer bemalten Fläche von 250 Quadratmetern weithin sichtbar am Straßenrand zwischen Palma und Manacor.

Bevor das Kunstwerk entstand, wurde der Turm sorgfältig entrostet und mit einer schützenden Antirostfarbe behandelt. Für die endgültige Beschichtung wurde wetterbeständiger Bootslack verwendet – denn das Kunstwerk sollte nicht vergänglich sein. Mithilfe der Arbeit vieler engagierter Helfer entstand schließlich eine Skulptur, die heute als offizielles Kulturerbe Mallorcas gilt.

Wer vorbeifährt, spürt die stille Präsenz dieses Bauwerks. Es fügt sich ein in die Landschaft – und hebt sich gleichzeitig ab. Besonders Kinder sind fasziniert vom ungewöhnlichen Anblick: Im Volksmund wird der Turm liebevoll "Chupa-Chup" (Pirulí) genannt – benannt nach dem bekannten Lutscher, an den seine Form erinnert. Was vielen jedoch verborgen bleibt: Die ursprüngliche Funktion dieses Objekts war rein technischer Natur.

Heute ist es viel mehr als das. Es ist ein Ausdruck von Kreativität, ein Denkmal für die Kraft der Kunst – und ein stiller, würdevoller Begleiter am Rand des Weges.

Sometimes, during our travels, we come across a place that touches us in a special way – the water tower of Son Gual in Mallorca is such a place.

What was once a simple water pressure regulator has become in 2006, through the artistic vision of Carlos "Charly" Galeano, an unmistakable landmark of the island. His goal was not simply to place art in a space, but to make it merge with the landscape – as if it had always belonged there.

The work is titled "El hombre y las carreteras" ("The Man and the Roads"). Standing over 26 metres tall and covering a painted surface of 250 square metres, it is clearly visible by the roadside between Palma and Manacor.

Before it became a work of art, the tower was carefully de-rusted and treated with anti-corrosion paint. For its final coat, durable marine paint was used – because the artwork was meant to endure. Thanks to the efforts of many dedicated helpers, a sculpture was created that is now recognised as an official cultural heritage site of Mallorca.

Anyone passing by can sense the silent presence of this structure. It blends into the landscape – yet stands out at the same time. Children in particular are fascinated by its unusual shape: Locals affectionately call the tower "Chupa-Chup" (or Pirulí) – after the well-known lollipop it resembles. What many don't know is that the original function of this object was purely technical.

Today, it is so much more. It is an expression of creativity, a monument to the power of art – and a quiet, dignified companion along the road.
