"Az Úr esztendeinek homályában, midőn Balkány határában még az erdőknek szavuk vala, idegen földről érkezék egy mag, apróbb minden reménynél. A vének úgy tarták, nem közönséges fa lészen belőle, mert ott kelt ki, hol a föld mélye és az ég rendje titkon összeér."

"Növekedék esztendőről esztendőre, s a nép észrevevé, hogy alatta az idő másként jár. Ki megpihene tövében, könnyebb szívvel kel vala fel, s aki igaz szóval fordula hozzá, annak álmában régi idők képei jelenének meg. Mondák, hogy a fa emlékezik mindarra, amit az ember feled."

"És lőn egy éjszaka, midőn a vihar nemcsak az eget, de a lelkeket is ostromlá. Villám hasítá meg a sötétet, s az emberek félve maradának házaikban. Csak egy vándor jöve az úton, ki útját téveszté, s halálos félelem szorítá szívét. Ő a mamutfenyő tövéhez borula, s esküvé, hogy ha élve megmarad, soha nem árt élőnek."

"A villám elcsapá a fa koronáját, de nem égeté meg; a szél megkerülé, mintha láthatatlan kéz tartaná. Reggelre a vándor eltűnék, de a fa tövében friss forrás fakada egyetlen napra, majd ismét elenyészék. Azóta mondják, hogy a balkányi mamutfenyő nemcsak áll, hanem őriz: esküt, emléket és azokat, kik tiszta szívvel keresik fel."

"In the haze of the Lord's years, when the forests near Balkány still spoke, a seed arrived from a foreign land, smaller than any hope. The elders believed it would become no ordinary tree, for it sprouted where the depths of the earth secretly meet the order of the heavens."

"It grew year after year, and the people noticed that time moved differently beneath it. Whoever rested at its base rose with a lighter heart, and to whoever spoke to it with truthful words, images of ancient times appeared in their dreams. They said the tree remembers everything that humanity forgets."

"And there came a night when a storm battered not only the sky, but souls as well. Lightning pierced the dark, and people remained fearful in their homes. Only a traveler came along the path, lost and gripped by mortal fear. He fell at the base of the giant sequoia and swore that if he survived, he would never harm a living creature."

"The lightning struck the crown of the tree, but did not burn it; the wind bypassed it as if held by an invisible hand. By morning the traveler had disappeared, but at the base of the tree a fresh spring bubbled for a single day, then faded away once more. Since then, it is said that the giant sequoia of Balkány not only stands, but guards: oaths, memories, and those who seek it with a pure heart."
