A while ago - while hiding the cache „Dwasieden“ – I visited former NVA barracks. In one of the remaining ruins I came across a pile of NVA memorabilia which also contained an old metal box. Under a thick layer of rust I could see the remainders of old German style letters: S....ng G....im!

. Unfortunately nothing hinted at how this box ended up where I found it. I took the box home with the intension of further investigation, but I didn’t get to it for a while. Finally I was able to open the box which revealed the following very interesting content:

an old radio message from 1943
a page ripped from a book with hard-to-read scribbles.

Both documents showed signs of age, crumpled and yellowed, stained, and covered with ink and coffee spots.

I asked a friend who specializes in old documents. He told me that this page was once part of an ENIGMA code book. The radio signal was encoded, and we would have to crack the code. I tried my best to find the corresponding code to decipher the text. It turned out to be not an easy task especially since all important parts of the code book were illegible.

But eventually I solved the riddle, and what I found was quite surprising. The surprise was big enough to spark the interest of the former East German Volksmarine. Now I make these documents available to my fellow geochachers – have fun exploring history!

Da ich nur noch sehr selten zum Cachen und auch zur Cachewartung komme (meist nur noch im Urlaub), gebe ich diesen Cache zur Adoption frei. Falls ihn jemand adoptieren möchte, kann er sich gerne bei mir melden.

19 October 2013 Howies Crew found the geocache

Sehr schönes Rätsel... - hat uns einige Zeit in Atem gehalten. Der Outdoor-Teil war dann deutlich pflegeleichter zu absolvieren.
