Lediglich die Cache-Location selbst... Aber als wir sie endlich gefunden hatten und die Einträge der anderen lesen konnten, waren wir froh, dass es fast allen gleich ergangen ist :-)

Hallo miteinander

Wuggi hat gerufen und wir haben seine Einladung zu seinen 1000. Cache, sowie zu seinen Geburtstag angenommen.

Nachdem Hman und ich die Fragen bei Stage 1 beantwortet haben müssten wir nur noch auf das Geburtstagskind warten. Der Weg zu Stage 2 war kein Problem. Danach waren Stage 3 bis 5 auch schnell gelöst. Auch wenn das eine oder andere mal Orotl und Edorian die denn Cache schon kannten nicht euphorisch mit uns gestartet sind und eher im Hintergrund auf uns gewartet haben.

Bei einen der Stages haben wir alle denn gleichen rechen Fehler gemacht, so dass unsere Cache Koordinaten über einen Kilometer off waren. Aber dank Owner als Spoiler fanden wir unseren Rechenfehler und so war der Cache kein Problem mehr.

Tolle Tour durch den Badlgraben, den ich ja schon von den anderen beiden Caches ein bisschen kannte. Die besondere Herausforderung ist der permanent grenzwertige GPS-Empfang in Kombination mit dem totalen Fehlen jeglicher Wegbeschilderung. Umso grösser dann die Freude über die tollen Felsformationen und Höhlen bei S3-S5. Besonders die natürliche Klimaanlage bei S5 konnte bei diesem Wetter begeistern. S6 liegt dann mitten in einem Meteoriteneinschlagskrater. Der Cache ist aber heil geblieben und mit Spoilerfoto auch ganz gut zu finden. Er stand bloß ein bisschen unter Wasser, weil die Location witterungstechnisch nicht ganz optimal gelegen ist.

Ufff, endlich gefunden. Oft genug war ich ja schon im Badlgraben untewegs, bei jeder Witterung. Mit Schnee und Eis, ohne Schnee und Eis. Diesmal hatte ich keine Lust wieder im Graben herumzukraxeln, ich hatte eine Ahnung wo der cache siche befindet (ungefähr). Also mit Spoilerbild hin und S U C H E N. Hab schon einige Zeit gebraucht, aber das lag eher daran das das Gebiet um den cache völlig verwüstet ist, alle Bäume geschlägert, sie liegen kreuz und quer verstreut und man muss drunter und drüber kraxeln. Die cache location ist auch mitten unter Ästen und Stämmen, dem cache selbst gehts aber gut, da das versteck Baumfällsicher ist. Ein toller cache, ich bin stolz das ich ihn nach einigen Anläufen endlich gefunden habe. Cache ist in gutem Zustand und trocken.

Heute hab ich mich endlich dazu durchgerungen diesen Cache fertig zu machen. Station 1 und 2 hab ich vorigen Winter bei Eis und Schnee gemacht (mit j_blue zusammen). Nun, wo ich mein Ziel (300 Caches bis Ende 2006) noch erreichen will, musste dieser Cache schließlich doch noch herhalten.
Gleich, als ich bei der vermeintlichen Station 3 angekommebn bin merkte ich schon, dass da was nicht passen kann. Ich fand zwar etwas, wo man hineinrobben konnte, jedoch fand ich dort dann keine (richtige)Höhle vor (Dafür habe ich meine Jacke komplett versaut...). Schild sowieso nicht. Also bekam ich von Gert einen wichtigen Hinweis, wie ich ungefähr zu Station 3 kommen würde. Das war natürlich gar nicht da, wo mich mein Pfeil hingeführt hat. Also hab ich den richtigen Weg gesucht und konnte dann auch ohne GPS schnell Station 3 finden. Dort angekommen, wusste ich, dass ich mich voriges Jahr wohl bei den Steighilfen verzählt hatte. Naja, jedenfalls hab ich mich gefreut und ging optimistisch die nächsten Stages an. Stage 4 war auch relativ bald gefunden, auch wenn das GPS 120m in die andere Richtung zeigte (hab ich schon erwähnt, dass der Empfnag sehr bescheiden war)? Bei dieser Station tat ich mich sehr schwer die Zahlen/Buchstaben zu entziffer. Mit viel raten bin ich dann zu neuen Koordinaten gekommen, jedoch hatte ich kaum mehr Empfang.
Ich bin zuerst in die eine Richtung gegangen (es war übrigens sehr rutschig und mit einigen Ausrutschern war dann auch die Hose total verschmutzt). Irgendwann, Empfang war noch immer keiner, hab ich dann wieder umgedreht und bin rund 200m in die andere Richtung gegangen. Wieder keine Höhle. Die Dämmerung begann einzusetzen, also gab ich auf. Beim Weg runter (ein direkterer Weg als beim Aufstieg) folgte ich einem Wegerl und plagte mich über verschiedene Felsen usw. nach unten. Irgendwo in der Mitte erkannte ich ein Platzerl, dass ich vorher von oben sah, als ich umgedreht hatte um in die andere Richtung zu gehen. 10m weiter sah ich dann Stage 5. Ich stand genau auf der Höhle, als ich umgedreht hatte zuvor *augenroll*
Als ich nun sah, wo mich mein Pfeil hinführen wollte, gab ich endgültig auf, da ich nicht nochmal zurück wollte.
Am Rückweg, endeckte ich dann allerdings noch einen Weg (ich war gerade beim Händewaschen), der zufällig genau dorthin zeigte, wohin auch der Pfeil zeigte. Trotz einsetzender Dunkelheit startete ich noch einen letzten Versuch und wurde nach 10min Suche fündig.
Der Abstieg in der Dunkelheit war einfacher als befürchtet.
Der Cache ist in sehr gutem Zustand.
Als Spoiler hab ich irrtümlich meinen Ausdruck vor Ort liegen lassen - der nächste wird sich vielleicht über diese Hilfe freuen ;-)

Heimgefahren bin ich dann übrigens in Unterwäsche aus Rücksicht auf mein frisch geputztes Auto....

Nach einer ausgiebigen Mittagspause ging das Cacheteam (Dr. T., Suppport Team Lisi+Ari, Gebu und die Waldschrats) durch den Badlgaben, rauf und runter, brutal rauf und brutal runter mit Hinternrutschpartien. YUHU, Leben du kannst so schön sein.

Was soll ich sagen...

Gestern war ich mit CUP'lah und orotl auf meiner ersten Cachesuche.
Der Tag war wunderbar - strahlender Sonnenschein, Temperaturen ok und der Badlgraben war traumhaft anzusehn. Wie auch schon orotl erwähnt hat. Die Eiswände und vor allem die "Eispilze" waren ziemlich gigantisch.

Das Gelände war zwischendurch nicht so ganz leicht zu meistern (hauptsächlich aber wegen des Schnees) aber die Suche gestaltete sich als sehr lustig.

Großen Dank auch an dieser Stelle an orotl, der uns als Führer und "NichtTippGeber" zur Seite stand. War ein toller Tag.

Ja und wie's aussieht, wirds wohl nicht mein letzter Cache gewesen sein, den ich suche.

Nachdem sich CUP'lah (den ich bei unserem Abenteuerführung in der Lurgrotte kennenlernte) sich schon als süchtig bekannte, bevor er den ersten Cache gesucht hat, verabredeten wir uns (mit seinem Freund m-hauer) für heute zu einer 'Einführungstour'.
Eine Wanderung auf die Platte konnte die beiden nicht wirklich begeistern, der Badlgraben war ein Begriff also auf zum gleichnamigen Cache ;)
Ich hatte 2 GPS mit, jeder kriegte eines und los gings.
Kurz gesagt: Sie meisterten alle Stationen mit der Sicherheit 'alter Cacher', einzig der Abstieg zur letzen Höhle bereitete uns allen einige Sorgen, aber auch das schafften wir.
Ich musste nur einmal einschreiten: als die beiden im Begriff waren, den gleichen Fehler wie DrTorque und ich zu machen, da wollte ich bei der Schneelage nicht mitspielen [:D]

Cache: m-hauer ging auf Anhieb zum richtigen Felsen, ein Blick zur richtigen Stelle, dann ging er kurz weg - wieder zurück und er hielt den Cache in der Hand - er soll nur nicht glauben, dass dies der Normalfall ist [}:)]
Hier erreichte mich auch ein Anruf von Gert, der am Weg zum 'Hoch übern Badlgraben' war - wir verabredeten ein Treffen 'unten' im Graben.

Zur Tour: einfach wunderbar, Eiswände links und rechts des Grabens, aus dem Boden wachsende Eiszapfen in den Höhlen, traumhaftes Wetter...
Obwohl ich den Cache schon 'hatte' war der Ausflug einfach wieder toll - danke Edorian...

Nachdem ich den "Bei den ersten Österreichern daham" - Cache versteckt habe, bin ich gemeinsam mit norskog auf der Suche gegangen. Doch leider wurde es dann schon zu spät.
Heute habe ich die letzte Station schnell gefunden und mich durch eine ca. 30 cm dicke gefrorene Schicht aus Eis, Laub und Schnee zum Cache vorgekämpft. Aufgrund der Spoilerbilder wusste ich, dass ich richtig bin, sonst hätte ich nicht so verbissen gekämpft

Tolle Wanderung durch den, zu jeder Jahreszeit schönen, Badlgraben. Auf dem Weg von Abschnitt 4 zu Abschnitt 5 sollte man gut Aufpassen, denn bei rutschigen (gefrorenen) Boden oder mit viel Laub kann es recht gefährlich werden und man kann einen unlustigen Abflug machen

About 2 months after my first try I could found this really hard cache today.
At the end of June I took my first try to search for this cache. A really nice hike up the river to the old house, afterwards a few nice caves. All this were not really a problem, but at the area of the final cache I searched for more than 2 hours but there was no way for me to find the final station.
So two months later, added with the spoiler pictures I tried it again and after a short while I get this cache

Left my bike on the other side of the "Badlgallerie", where the forest road starts that I took last time on my way back.
From the forest road I took a rather direct approach to stage 3, just to arrive at a small path close to it. Finding the caves was a bit difficult due to bad gps reception - basically, it's just "down, down!" all the time
Following the path next to the creek I went back to the starting coordinates and took a rather steep path (which was, by the way, also used by the military) to reach the area of the final stage.
Found the box within a few minutes. It's still in good condition.
As the forest road was not far away (at least according to my gps-r) I made my way through the bushes and went down the forest road to my bike.
Nice cache. TNLN.

No problems until stage two, where I had some issues counting the windows due to the vegetation there. On the way to the next stage I decided to take a forest road which looked like it would lead close to stage three, but it didn't. After a while I followed a small path and ended up at a house that was completely hidden behind trees and looks like it was left about 15 years ago..
I'll be back (with a better map).

Als ich gerade noch 50m vom Cache der Ruine Peggau entfernt war, rief mich Dr.Torque an und erwähnte, dass er nach meinem Schlossbergache zum Badlgraben wolle.
Die Idee den Badlgraben zu suchen gefiel mir auf Anhieb, ich war nur etwas unsicher wegen meiner Fahrradschuhe, ein kurzes Telefonat mit Gert (der sowohl den Badlgraben, als auch mich schon ein bisserl kennt) liess mich meine Bedenken beiseitelegen und ich vereinbarte einen Treffpunkt mit Dr.Torque.
Nachdem ich eine Woche zuvor ja auch den Steintorache mit der gleichen Ausrüstung problemlos fand, dachte ich dass es ja kaum schlimmer werden könne ... umpf

Ich wollte immer schon mit einem erfahrenen Cacher losziehen, daher freute ich mich schon sehr auf .... Ari + Herrchen [:D]

Zur Suche selbst gibt es nicht mehr viel zu sagen, ausser eben der Tatsache dass die Wanderung durch den Badlgraben zu Stage 2 ein einziger Eiertanz auf glitschigen Steinen war.
Erwähnenswert vielleicht auch noch: um beim Fensterzählen ganz sicher zu sein, musste ich mit hochgestreckten Armen durch ein gewaltiges Brennesselfeld marschieren, juhu, das brannte durch Jeans und Leiberl durch...

Ari's gewaltige Kondition und Erfahrung beim Erkunden der möglichen Wegvarianten waren wirklich beindruckend.
Beim Cache liess er dann aber brav Dr.Torque den Vortritt - eine wahrlich edelmütige Geste!

Auch von mir ein grosses Danke an Edorian, ein wirklich beindruckender Cache!

Am späten Nachmittag hatte ich dann 70km Fahrrad und einige Kilometer Fussmarsch in den Beinen, irgendwie werde ich doch demnächst öfters mit dem Auto Cachen gehen müssen [xx(]

After a coffee at the parking site we started at 10:30. Follwing the presumtive intentions of the hider we had no serious problems to find more or less usable paths leading to all stages, even to st 5. (this was the less usable,but if you use hands and feet..).
St 2, left by its inhabitants 1974 as we were told, is not easy to approach- hazelnut sticks are available nearby.
Lucky we were to have best gps signals almost all the time,even in the middle of the gorge 5 sats reception.
At least we plotted the hiding point on the map to reach it on a quite comfortable way.
We had no photo with us but the spoiler pic from the flatscreen burned in our brains since a printout was not possible at the hotel - so the cache was found in less than a minute, dry and in best condition at 14:00.

First effort: June 11th, afternoon
Problem 1: At the end of Stage 1 I found three signs attached to the building, none had anything to do with an anniversary, none of them carried any number, not to speak of a three-digit-number. I tried the nearby new signboard, there are many numbers (on both sides), even a three-digit-one, but that one made no sense.
So I decided to look for the other building and determine the letter then "backwards".
The Gorge is very interesting with its narrow walls. After a while I found the building. The next visitor may still see where I tried to get close enough to count the windows (the lower part was invisible due to vegetation that turned out to be 100% nettles .
There it started to rumble in the sky. When I arrived at the stone arc (I found a very comfortable way to that stage without problems) it still sounded like a thunderstorm was approaching. But with such a cave available as a shelter I didn't care so the thunderstorm went away.
The scout-cave was found quickly. The way down to the last cave was some sort of hand-and-toe-trail. Of course I arrived on top of the cave first. I was grateful for the rush of cool air that comes out of the cave.
In order to get near the final I went up again as I preffered the known risk to the unknown ones (I didn't like the direction to where that other path was turning).
Arriving at the final stage I discovered that I had no printout of the spoiler and I couldn't remember how it looked like. After 30 minutes heavy rain set in. I waited under a rock for a while, then I searched for 30 min more before I gave up.
June 12: Getting hints from edorian
Today: No problem.
I found it not far from the place where I was hiding during the rain. And I am pretty sure that I had looked into this hole once or twice.

I can only recommend to bring a trekking-pole for probing. The sound of metal against tupper is much better detectable than the sound of wood against tupper.
When I left a corner of the cache still could be visible for very small dwarfs (of for cameras held into places where no human would stick his head in). I have place a stick beneath it to stop it from sliding down.

Well, this time I found the cache box. I came from another direction via a longer, but more comfortable path than the one Alice and myself had taken last week.

This time I was not tired when I arrived at the target area, but still I had to search for quite a while (about 30 minutes). I had not expected the cache where I eventually found it since I would have hidden it at different places. (This sentence might sound somewhat strange, but I cannot become more explicit because I do not want to provide spoilers.)

I guess that I never before have been so sad when I found a cache than today. I would have wished so much to find this cache together with Alice who deserves a "found it" log so much more than me - without her I would not have managed to get to Stage 5 and could not have done this cache at all.

As I wrote already in my previous "did not find" log, this is a nice, but demanding cache. Without this cache I would never ever have visited the Badlgraben. I would have missed a very nice experience and adventure.

It seems to me that the difficulty rating of this cache should be increased, perhaps by 1 point. It is a long multi stage cache, and some of the stages are hard to find due to bad GPS reception and the terrain that is harder than 3.5* if one does not find the right paths. Moreover, also the final cache is not trivial to find due to a bad GPS reception and millions of potential hiding places in the target area. (The fact that Gert, a previous finder and experienced cacher thought that the cache has been stolen, is a further evidence.)

Thanks, Edorian, for a very nice, challenging cache, for providing me with some additional information on the terrain difficulty several months ago, as well as for checking the cache so quickly.

This cache apparently does not like me. I made a first attempt last Summer after having done another cache. I was alone and so I was sure that I would not be able to finish the cache. I wanted to have a look at the Badlgraben. I reached Stage 3 (the way through the gorge was nice, but not easy for me), and then made a stupid mistake. I confused the letters I and L because I had folded the cache description. I got strange coordinates for Stage 4 and then gave up and returned home.

Today Alice and myself made a new attempt. Because I had the old cache description, I thought that we should not meet problems caused by mistakes in the new version. So we decided to go for the cache despite its disabled status. Probably not a good idea although the hike was very nice and full of adventures.

Today the creek had much more water than last Summer and some paths of the path were quite slippery. We had no problems until Stage 3. After a few minutes Alice found a nice path to Stage 4. We then obtained the coordinates of Stage 5.

We could not find a reasonable path leading to Stage 5 from above although Alice tried very hard and we searched around quite a while. We then decided to go back to the gorge the way we had used to Stage 3. Although the GPS reception was bad in the part of the gorge close to Stage 5 Alice managed to find a small path leading up to Stage 5. The path was relatively steep, but manageable also for me.
We were very happy having found the last cave. After having computed the coordinates of the final cache, we decided to go down to the creek again. After having arrived back at the Kerngast inn, Alice detected a steep path leading upwards into the direction of the final cache. We took this path which was quite exhausting. It brought us in the target area with tons of rocks (=potential hiding places for the cache).

We searched for quite a while. The GPS was very jumpy. We could not find the cache. We found, however, some plastic bags - Alice suspects that an animal or a forest worker has removed the cache from its place. I am not that sure as I have already found plastic bags at many strange places in a forest. Moreover, I was somewhat tired and it was hard for me to recall where I had searched already. Caches hidden in areas with many rocks are not my destiny (I will never forget my first attempt to find the N47° E15° cache where I searched for a non-existing box).

We then gave up and Alice suceeded in finding a less steep path than the one we took uphill. It led us close to the Kerngast inn, but we had to pass through some private property in the last part.

The gorge is very nice. This cache was for sure the most demanding one from the physical point of view I have ever done. I was very disappointed that we had to leave without having found the cache. The hike was, however, worth the time and energy we invested into the cache search. It was a big adventure to find all caves.

The cache should be checked since close to the target area heavy forest works have taken place recently.
If the cache turns out to be still at its place, I'd suggest to provide a further hint or a spoiler photograph to help people that do not want to give up after having invested a lot of energy.

Wow, this cache truly resisted my efforts to find it.
It all started last Sunday when I made my first try to find it. The numbers of stage 1 were collected quickly and stage 2 reached after a walk of 20 min. There I managed to make areally stupid mistake. I erronously substracted the last digit from the second to last digit of the FIRST telephone-number from stage 1. This error put stage 3 in a distance of about 2.8 km to the NE. I thought well, looks like this is a pretty demanding cache and followed the GPS-arrow. Imagine my surprise when the coorinates led me to an open field NW of Semriach... Argh, next time I sanity-check my coordinates first. Walking back my GPS batteries were pretty low and I decided to forget the cache for now and instead try to find the cave on the northern rim of the valley. After some hazardous climbing on the steep slopes I found the cave (I visited it years ago before, but the area around there has changed greatly) - the proper coordinates are:
N47° 13.761
E15° 20.936

Today I started the second try. As soon as I entered the gorge I lost all satellites and did the cache in a pretty unusal fashion.
I had a pretty good guess which cave was at the coordinates of Stage 5 so I walked there and collected all the info. Still not having any satellites I climbed the slope uphill and stumbled over Stage 4. Now having all info needed for the final stage but still no satellites I climbed back down to Stage 5 and waited for better reception (thinking that the final cache would be around this area). After 15min and a short but strong rainshower my GPS finally found 3 sats and I went directly to Stage 6 where I found the cache after a short search.

In short: great cache in a really impressive area. At first I was a bit annoyed by all the number-crunching, but as soon as you hit the later stages its great fun. I´d rate this as the most demanding cache in the Graz-area - there´s some pretty wild terrain there.
