Description    Deutsch  ·  English

This cache leads amongst others to the nice castle grounds “Paffendorf”. It’s in possession of RWE Power now (formerly Rheinbraun) and is being used as information- and presentation centre. On the first floor of the manor-house there is an interesting permanent exhibition regarding the history of lignite in the Rhineland-area.

Furthermore Paffendorf castle is starting point of the theme-route “Straße der Energie” (Street of energy).

More information about castle and garden will be found here here

You best park your car at the above-named coordinates and have a short walk with some 400 m distance to the park entrance. If this is to much for you just access the parking lot of the castle at N 50°57.850‘ / E006°36.500‘ first.

The access to the park is free but will be closed o/n. Please notice the opening hours:
April till September daily 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
October till March daily 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The cache itself is located outside the park-area and is accessible around the clock.

Now lets begin. According to the theme you will have to answer some questions in respect of lignite as a start.
If you are not common with the language of the region you might feel uncomfortable with question C. Just ask any of the friendly natives around.

A =

Once here were vast woods and swamps the lignite arising from its biomass in the course of time. If you wish to stroll through these woods how many years do you have to travel back in the past with your time-machine?
(1) 2 m.
(2) 20 m.
(3) 200 m.
(4) 2.000 m.

B =

The world lignite extraction amounts nearly one billion tons a year (916 m. tons in 2004). What is the share of Germanys lignite output?
(5) 5 percent
(6) 10 percent
(7) 15 percent
(8) 20 percent

C =

Originally the hand-excavated lignite was filled in jars similar to flower-pots, unmoulded (just like making sand-cakes at the children’s playground) and air-dried in the summertime. These lignite-“cakes” had a special name that is used as a colloquial synonym for lignite-briquettes still nowadays. That is to say?
(9) Knubbel
(10) Nubbel
(11) Klütten
(12) Klöten

D =

Once the lignite more or less used to be regarded as waste product to the potter’s clay production, that had to be removed first to come near the clay. Not earlier than in the end of the 17th century people found out that the wet waste product could be used as fuel when dried. What was it the lignite was used as before?
(13) polishing agent for copper and brass
(14) dyestuff „cologne brown“
(15) anti-smell litter for open toilet-pits
(16) additive for loam rendering

All questions answered correctly?

So you have already overcome the first obstacle. Now proceed to the following coordinates inside the park looking for a number in each case. You will need the pictures.

E =
N 50°57.892‘ / E006°36.564‘

F =
N 50°57.925‘ / E006°36.538‘

G =
N 50°58.006‘ / E006°36.389‘

H = (add the numbers)
N 50°57.880‘ / E006°36.749‘

Now it’s time for a little calculation.

b = E – C + H
c = E * F – C
d = G – (B + A)
f = D / (H – F)
g = D + H – G
h = D – A * H
k = D – (E + F)

Leave the park again (legally only possible via main entrance) and go to stage K at

N 50°57.hhd‘
E006°36.fdf‘

There you will find details on the location of the final.

Found 19 May 2012 Wuchtel found the geocache

Found 31 January 2011 GEOrgCACHING found the geocache
